[Niko hears a sound of pain and goes to look for where it came from. Two years ago? He wouldn't have given half a shit about a random sound of discomfort... well, maybe a slight, barely there one. Mostly if the sound was feminine. Otherwise he would have been disinterested.]
[But he's been crew-minded again long enough that he seeks out the noise, and only makes it over there in time to see what looks like a young tree person. One that sounded as if it was in pain.]
[His chest grows unexpectedly tight, thinking of those soldiers on Macha. Those unfortunate children that never stood a chance, wielding their bows and arrows. And it's at this point he realizes that he's just ran up to this kid and stared.]
Ah....
[Well, he just made everything uncomfortable. He's good at that.]
So.
Pretty... light show?

He blinks slowly a couple of times after the man speaks. He looks more awkward than sad now. Link nods, then, very decidedly, which looks almost comical with how large his head is compared to his body. It's a miracle he doesn't tip himself over in the process.]
Yeah, [he agrees, his voice coming out high and trilling and woody like it always does when he's in this form.] Like new stars.

...I don't remember there being a tiny tree person on board. I will be honest. [That would have stuck with him.] I am Niko. You are?
no subject
Oh... I'm not a Deku. Not really. I'm wearing a mask. It's magic... [He hasn't... explained this in a while. Nobody believed him in Clock Town, unless they could already sense that it wasn't his natural shape. But, he thinks that, all things about the Moira considered, he'll probably be believed here.] My name's Link.
no subject
But you're not Neraki, then? [Or deku? Whatever it was Link was saying.] Yeah. Magic. Still ah... still not used to that.
Magic that makes whole people look like trees. Pretty new to me.

He nods again, and then reaches up for his face. He seems to hook his little wooden fingers around the edge of... something -- there doesn't really seem to be anything there, just tree-face, and then... well. A strange thing happens.
Behold, there's now... a kid with pointy ears standing there instead of a tree kid. And he's got a sword and a shield. Link shakes his head a little to re-orient himself.]
no subject
[But Niko does not have the reaction that he should.]
[Yes, he is awed, because the idea of a mask changing someone so utterly is impressive. But then there's this kid.]
Oh my god, look at your fucking ears. [It comes out of his mouth before he can stop himself, but then he moves on quickly, hoping that Link doesn't react to the swear.] Do you come in big? [He makes a motion near the top of his own head.] I met a guy on my last ship with ears like this. He was my height. Looked kind of similar.
no subject
Uh... ["Do you come in big" is such a confusing question. Enough so that his answer falls out of his mouth before he can catch himself.] I don't think I was that tall when I was... [When he was an adult. That's going to be even harder to explain than the mask, though. And he doesn't really want to talk about it. So he'd better figure out something to say, and fast.]
I'll grow up eventually, [is what he settles on, lamely.]
no subject
[To his credit, he had asked that man if he could touch his floaty green balls.]
Okay, yeah.
Sorry, I met this guy. He was- he had that sort of ears and hair your color, but his eyes glowed and he was a pretty big man.
no subject
... huh. Link isn't entirely sure what to make of that.]
It's okay, [he says, though he still seems generally confused. But, he remembers Chara assuming they were from the same world, and he supposes he can't actually take it for granted. So, he'll go ahead ask this time.] Did he say he was Hylian?
no subject
[He just knows more magic happened. That's the important part.]
There was a ship I was on before this- not a very good one. But we would get people from different places there, too. And honestly? I don't like that we show up against our will but I am glad you are here rather than on that one.
[He ends up stooping down so he can try to get a better look at Link.]

Wasn't it an accident? [The magic -- or whatever -- of the Ingress reaching out and grabbing them, pulling them here... He thinks the captains would send them back, if they could.
But the part that matters to him is that... If it's an accident, then it means someone didn't choose to pull him away from Termina at such an important time.]
