"I used to live in a room of mirrors, and all I could see was me..."

It left him momentarily breathless. A feat, considering his distinct lack of lungs.
"Papyrus?" he finally managed, squinting against the blue light. Sans's voice was as even as ever, now that the brief hitch in his breathing was behind him. Whatever was going on, the last thing he wanted was for Papyrus to think something was wrong. "Is that you...?"
BROTHER!!!
And yet, here they were, whole and alive and perfectly safe, and he crosses to meet up with Sans in a few long strides. "Thank goodness! Not that I was worried, of course!"
no subject
Still, Sans had to play the big bro once in a while. "You okay?" He asked, lowering his voice slightly. "I mean, not that I'm worried, but. Y'know. Gotta ask."
Now that he was getting a look around, well... there were a lot of humans. More than Sans was strictly comfortable with, especially with Papyrus in front of him, providing an unsettling living contrast to the memory of his dust mixing with fresh snow.

Maybe he was laying it on a little thick, but Sans tended to take him at his word.

Papyrus occasionally remembered things he shouldn't have any business knowing. This could be more of that. Another echo; different, but not new.
That had to be it.
"Well, we better keep sharp. Don't want to get into treble." Sans winked, awaiting the inevitable groan before continuing. "Talked to anyone else yet?"
no subject
"Oh, yes! I met a plant-Steven, and a lady with a gun, and a strange fuzzy creature that called himself a Lombax. I think he might be a confused puppy, though."
Sans's stress was subtle, but he'd lived with him too long to fail to catch it. He gave Sans a light slap on the back and grinned at him. Don't worry so much, brother. The Great Papyrus does not intend to fail twice.
no subject
"More monsters is good for us, right?"
no subject
"Anyway!" Another pat on the back, along with a slight push to get Sans moving. "We should probably get out of here and see what the rest of the place is like. Come along, Sans!"
no subject
He let out a yawn that was only slightly exaggerated. After the day he'd had, well, Sans really was tired.
"Can we stop off by the sleeping quarters first? I wanna get to acquainted with my bunk. This is the start of a long and fruitful relationship between us. I want to do it right, y'know?"
no subject
And maybe, considering where he'd just come from, he wanted to hang close to Sans just a little longer.
no subject
Hell, Sans had enough of humans for the year.
"Alright, fair point." Sans tapped uselessly at his MID. These really did not work that well for fleshless folk, did they? Standing a little closer to Papyrus than he might normally, Sans nudged at his brother. "Lead on, dude."

Sans froze, eye sockets fixed on the observatory window that greeted them down a short hallway. Without tearing his gaze away, he absently reached up to wind his fingers in Papyrus's scarf and tug.
"Bro. Papryus. Look."
no subject
He had been turning toward Sans as he spoke, more to give him the full force of his exasperation at stopping already, but then he caught the same view that had stopped his brother.
A vast array of stars sparkling in the largest, darkest field either of them had ever seen, and looming close, a strange planet.
Lacking the experience or perspective to fully grasp what he was looking at, he turned to Sans with questions written all over his face. Was it a sky? Was it dangerous? What did it all mean?

And now here he was again, staring into a wholly different inky blackness. One that under other circumstances, would fill most monsters to the brim with hope. Monsters were weird, after all. No matter how far they strayed from childhood, the stories of wishing on stars never quite lost their appeal.
Finally letting his grip slip on Papyrus's scarf, Sans let his hand fall down to his side. Unknowingly, he began clenching his fist.
Sans didn't have answers for Papyrus.
Not quite yet.
He needed a minute.

So he fell silent and stepped up, joining Sans by the window and admiring the view. Even if what exactly he was looking at hadn't clicked yet, it was breathtaking.
no subject
"Well, heh." Sans chuckled, thinly. "They did say we were in space, after all. Guess I shouldn't be surprised."
no subject
no subject
"It's a space ship, Pap." He squinted up at his brother, equal parts fond and bemused. "The only fish you're going to see out there are starfish."
A beat.
"'Cuz those are stars."
no subject
He didn't even bother gracing that terrible pun with the usual show of annoyance.

While they may have traded one prison for another, this was a definite improvement over the cramped cave they called home. Papyrus spent so much time dreaming of freedom, so much time planning for the surface, and now that they were this close, well. In Sans's opinion, his brother was shining far brighter than any of the stars outside.
"Well? What do you think?"
no subject
When he finally got his fill of the view (for now) he turned back to Sans, still emotional as his eyesockets brimmed with inexplicable tears.
"How did we get free? And where are all the others??"
no subject
How could anyone kill him?
"I, uh... I dunno, man." He finally turned back to the glass, smile dimming slightly. The others. Probably long gone now, if Sans had to guess. Swallowed up by the demonic child's rage and mercilessness. Sans and Papyrus were spared, but if the others weren't here already...
"They'll probably show up in the next few days." Sans knew so little of this place and how it worked, that hell. Maybe he wasn't as much of a liar as he felt like. "Just gotta be patient, that's all."
no subject
He grinned at Sans and nodded eagerly. "Of course! If we made it here, then it's only a matter of time before the others find the way!"
no subject
He probably deserved better. He definitely deserved better. But unfortunately for them both, Sans was all he had.
"C'mon." Sans nudged, after a few more minutes of awed stargazing. "There's a whole ship to explore. Let's get to it."
It was one of the few times in their lives that Sans was the one pushing his baby brother to get moving, but hey. Guilt could be a pretty powerful motivator.
