Who: Tony and Rey
When: Sometime in the first week of June
Where: Engine rooms
What: Two nerds walk into engineering...
Warnings: N/A
[ It's not that Tony dislikes his job assignment. Quite the opposite, actually; they'd somehow found work for him that's both relevant to his interests and his skill set. But his resentment of the entire situation tends to bleed into even the less-than-detestable parts, like work. Why help out the people who snapped you up out of your own life without any warning? Why keep their equipment running for them in exchange for meager subsistence? "Survival" is a good answer, probably, but not a satisfying one.
Still, after getting his fill of shore leave, he starts setting aside plenty of time to get acquainted with the ship itself. It'll take him weeks to really dig into what he wants to see, but today he's decided to start with the engines, given how closely he'll be working with them. The heat wraps him like a blanket, oddly comforting, and even the deafening thrum helps ease some of his nerves. Machines are all the same, at the end of the day. Logical. Reliable.
With his earplugs in and his attention fully occupied by a terminal near one of the turbines, it really wouldn't be any surprise at all if someone managed to sneak up on him. ]

So it is that she finds herself on her way to the Moira's engines, not for the first time. Except this time, she isn't alone. She sees the man before he sees her, and she's instantly wary. She's only ever seen one other person down here, and he definitely isn't her. She knows that approaching someone while they're unaware is only a good idea if you're trying to start a fight. Rather, end one very quickly. BB-9 swivels its head and whistles beside her, but she can't hear it over the roar of the engines either.
Rey thinks for a moment, and then reaches into her side-pouch and pulls out a hydrospanner. She frowns at it for a moment before lobbing it at his back. This is a good idea.]

He jumps and whirls around, looking possibly more alarmed than an errant space-screwdriver would warrant, but relaxes when he spots the perpetrator. She doesn't cut a very intimidating figure, no offense. Not somebody likely to jump him, at any rate.
He bends down to pick up the hydrospanner - giving it an openly intrigued look in the process - straightens out, waggling it accusingly. ]
Drop something?
[ Practically shouted over the noise of the engines ]
no subject
Rey raises an arm to sweep around the area, looking at him incredulously.]
What are you doing here?
[Also unhearable over the engines, but it's worth a shot.]
no subject
Me? I work here. [ It's quite a bit more audible now that he's not halfway across the engine room. ] What's your excuse?
[ She doesn't come off as a Concerned Employee or anyone who's about to ask him for ID, but then again, he's not interested in asking the same of her, either. If teenage girls want to hang around in eighty degree engine rooms in their spare time, more power to them. Respect. ]
no subject
I like engines.
[Lame, but true. She isn't always great at coming up with lies on her feet, especially when it's for mundane things like skulking around the engines of a giant spaceship she has no plans to crash.]
no subject
Oh.
...
Seriously? [ He sounds halfway to impressed. Finally, a kid with priorities. ] That's not the answer I expected. Is that why you're carrying tools around? They're not exactly ergonomic. Probably hurt to accidentally sit on, too.
no subject
I always carry them.
[She actually carries almost everything she owns on her almost all the time. Even after slowly acquiring more and more possessions, they still mostly fit into her pack. But there are more important things to discuss right now.]
Are you working on something?
no subject
[ Tony's not even technically on-duty yet. But his curiosity had gotten the best of him and he'd decided to get himself acquainted with what is, frankly, one of the most impressive feats of engineering he's yet encountered.
He doesn't know if he's supposed to send this girl packing or not, but it's not like he particularly gives a damn even if he is. Besides, any kid that lugs a bag full of tools around with them 24/7 has probably earned the right to hang around. ]
I was gonna start taking things apart and see what's inside.
no subject
To stop her.
Immediately, she strides forward, face set with determination. Even though she's starting to get excited, it's all business right now. She lifts her arm to point at the turbine behind him, hazel eyes focused on the spinning blades.]
It's rattling around different than when I got here. Something's off in it. [She points to somewhere behind him.] And I think the couplings can be improved. They're basic at best and could use some upgrades. I've seen older ships with better machinery. It's depressing.
1/2
This kid knows her shit. Now that's what he's talking about. ]

[ "We," a pointed word choice, and one he probably wouldn't be using if this were a matter of tinkering with his own mechanics. But these are another story entirely, and while he's fascinated by them, he doesn't feel particularly possessive. Why not have an extra pair of hands? He's already seen how much more tedious basic tasks are without his robotics to assist. Still, he trusts her to take his meaning. She seems like a sharp kid.
He turns on his heel and raps his knuckles against the large metal panel enclosing the turbine. ]
Think your fancy space screwdriver can get this thing off?
no subject
Besides, she caught that very specific word choice. He's already accepted her help, which in her mind means there's no denying it now.
BB-9 rolls up beside her, her whistling almost drowned out by the turbine. But Rey hears it, and gives her little dome head a pat.]
It's a hydrospanner. And probably, but she'll be faster.
[The droid swivels her head towards Tony and then one of her front panels pops open to reveal her arc welder. Without waiting for further instruction, the droid rolls towards the panel, beeping at Tony on the way. A smile pulls at Rey's lips.]
She said it'll take a few minutes. And that I made a good choice in letting her take over.
no subject
[ Less work for him.
Tony finally manages to give the droid his full attention while she sets to work, particularly when she starts procuring nifty tools out of nowhere. He'd seen a giant robot man do this same thing earlier. Damn, he should take notes.
He doesn't make any move to touch the droid, but he does crouch down to watch her work, curiosity obviously piqued. The head moves separate from the body - obviously some kind of gyroscope/magnet setup - which is ingenious and kind of impractical. Which means he approves. ]
You got a name? [ He says to the robot before the girl, before glancing up. Oh, right. ] Both of you.
no subject
It doesn't faze her when he refers to the robot before the person--she's done the same thing on more than one occasion. The droid beeps out her name in binary, and Rey translates, as she's wont to do:]
This is BB-9. And I'm Rey. [She reaches out to steady the metal.] Do you have a name?
no subject
He helps to steady the panel from his side, helping to slowly pry it loose while the droid works, and glances between the two of them. ]
Glad somebody here speaks beeps. You built her?
[ There's really no skepticism in his mind that that could plausibly be the case, any of his earlier assumptions having been, apparently, put to rest. ]
no subject
Rey does her best to contain her excitement--this is as close as she's ever been able to get to the engines of the Moira. She has poked around the transporters' bits and pieces, of course, but they were nothing compared to this. But his question is a good one, and she shakes her head.]
No, I got her in the uh, mail. But she was a blank slate. I had to program her from scratch.
[With a little help. Subprograms aren't really her area of expertise.]
no subject
Damn, you can just get build-a-robots in the mail around here? Thanks for the info. Using that in the future.
[ As the panel finally comes off proper, Tony pushes it aside with a loud scraping noise and wastes no time shining a small flashlight into the turbine. The blades are still spinning, so this is probably against every safety protocol ever, but that's not the kind of thing he every particularly cares about. How're they supposed to suss out the problem if it isn't running? ]
... Well, for a start, it doesn't look like anybody's cleaned this out since before the era of space travel.
no subject
Once the panel is down, BB-9 rolls a bit to expose another panel, which pops open to reveal a flashlight. Rey coughs a bit at all the dust and junk inside the turbine, and frowns.]
This looks like some of the wrecks on Jakku. Except instead of sand, it's dust.
no subject
Tony just pulls the collar of his shirt up over his mouth and nose and starts reaching for various components within the turbine. He has to brush off clumps of dust to get a good look at the fastenings. ]
What, you usually work with machines in this condition? I could weep.
[ That's INHUMANE. ]
no subject
Worse. Most of the ships I've worked on had already crashed.
[Most people didn't believe her when she talked about Jakku's ship graveyard. It was just so unlike anything on any other planet. After a few years, Rey had begun to believe the rumors that the Imperial army had intentionally crashed their ships into the Rebel fleet as a last-ditch effort to win the Battle of Jakku.]
no subject
[ There's merit to it, of course. Sometimes you can learn a lot from an old piece of engineering, even if it's just an understanding of what not to do, or how certain things break down over time. But working exclusively with that? Never something new? Something with its potential ahead of it, instead of behind it?
Sounds like a drag. ]
no subject
[She'd actually gotten her start working for other scavengers, ones who had been on Jakku for as long as they could remember. They would hire her to climb into the wrecks, to reach places they couldn't. It hadn't taken long for her to realize that they needed her, but she didn't need them. When she was still hardly more than a girl, she had begun working for herself and had never looked back.
Teamwork had burned her in the past, but this time, it isn't so bad. As she moves a little further into this part of the engine, she adds:]
Hopefully this won't be my next one.
no subject
Yeah, well, it's my job to make sure it's not, and I'm usually pretty good at my job.
[ He wrinkles his nose when the turbine sends a gust of dusty air directly into his face, and makes a mental note to get some proper goggles. ]
Though, you were probably making better dough hawking shipwrecks than you are here.
no subject
Small talk is... surprisingly easy with him. It's strange, but not unwelcome.]
I've never had any money, actually. [She pulls out a burnt fuse, inspects it for a moment, then throws it away over her shoulder.] I traded everything I found for food and water.
[Credits, or any kind of money, were basically unheard of on Jakku. Unkar Plutt didn't care about capital unless you had a lot of it, which wasn't a descriptor that applied to anyone on Jakku. Besides, why should he care about money? He controlled almost all of the portions and drinkable water on the planet. He didn't need money to get what he wanted out of the scavenger population.]
no subject
Paints a kind of morbid picture. ]
That's shitty. [ Bluntly, as he taps his knuckles against the rim of the open panel. ] A skillset like yours would get you places just about anywhere else.
[ He doesn't yet know the extent of that skillset, of course, but he's making some projections. ]
no subject
Perhaps that was just getting stranded on this ship, but who is she to tell the universe what to do?
Still, Rey has always had a pretty active imagination. She ponders his words for a moment, still working her fingers around the rusted edge of this fusebox.]
Yeah? Where would it get me?
no subject
[ Hell, he'd probably hire someone like her at SI. He's never been overly concerned with age or experience. He's someone who appreciates talent and brain above all else, and Pepper would fall over backwards to bring on more young women in general. ]
And getting your hands on some of the most cutting-edge tech, instead of other people's sloppy leftovers.
no subject
When he says cutting-edge, an idea strikes her. Rey stops prying at the fusebox and instead reaches for her lightsaber.]
I'll have to keep that in mind, if I ever make it to your galaxy.
[She makes sure to angle the beam away from him, and activates the saber. The laser hums to life, its bright blue light filling the confined space. BB-9 beeps behind them, almost as if she's in awe. Rey carefully starts to use the tip of the weapon to cut away at the rusted metal.]
no subject
[ Rey. You can't just casually whip out a lightsaber without any warning or explanation. You just can't. He stops everything he's doing to just stare in incredulous wonder at the absurdity of this. ]
You had that the whole time? You just carry that around on your person? You have one of those?
no subject
Yes to all three.
no subject
IT'S A FUCKING. LIGHTSABER!! ]
You are without a doubt my favorite teenager to ever just waltz into my department.
no subject
Her nose wrinkles at first, but she can't help but crack a little smile.]
I'm almost twenty. And you can't have that many teenagers "waltz" into your department, anyway. But... thanks.
no subject
[ He holds both hands up in a mocking 'surrender' gesture. ]
I don't make the rules.
no subject
Maybe I'll let you use it someday.
