far from nowhere
"the trees rustle in the evening when we stand uneasy before our own thoughts."

With the events of Del Pascia behind the Moira, things are only now beginning to settle—and not very well. Through the combined efforts of some of the crew, D-E-L and her permanent residents were incinerated into the dust of space. While it’s not the most peaceful end, it is one, and not many are going to be thinking back on how nice Del Pascia’s facilities were for quite some time. Repairing what they could of the ship’s interior and putting as much distance between the Moira and the prison as possible, those aboard are informed by Navigation that they are approaching another planet. This means, of course, the potential for better supplies, as some things are beginning to dwindle, and the Captains elect to dock so long as the crew follows protocol.
WELCOME TO AMISSIS-RE

Amissis-Re is an unregistered planet with no documented histories or signs of life. The Moira’s Navigation crew have scanned the planet for any usable resources and have discovered a faint signal emitting from beneath the surface of Amissi-Re. Using the transporters and any other crafts located in the Cargo Bay, the crew are able to travel to the source of the signal. Upon arriving in its exact location, they’ll find a small series of lakes that lead to a tower-like structure that appears to be in use. Crew must cross a poorly assembled bridge system that sways and dips when weight is applied to it in order to gain access to the entrance. Once there, a woman comes out to greet them and explains, excitedly, that she is so very happy that they have come to Amissis-Re.

Everyone can go home.

Their host insists that she has done the impossible and has somewhat fixed the Ingress that’s been built on Amissis-Re a long time ago, and what’s more, she can send crew home for short bursts of time. Upon following this woman inside, crew will find that the planet is not, in fact, barren at all. Diving deep into the underbelly of Amissis-Re, it’s like an eternal factory of machines, and while vast, for whatever reason, it also seems incredibly welcoming...

LEAP OF FAITH ( 05.01 and on )
The barren planet of Amissis-Re is devoid of vegetation and organic life except for a lone woman, and the planet itself is an intricate honeycomb of machines that go for miles below the surface. Yet, that seems insignificant and unimportant in comparison to the news that the crew has just received. After Thán has looked at the Ingress, he tells the crew that he cannot say for certain that it is properly functioning, but Emiri native, Ben Link, will volunteer to test it out.

An elevator takes crew down to a glass platform that overlooks an inverted Ingress portal. In order to return home, the Moirans will have to take a leap of faith and jump in. Ben, in order to show his commitment to the crew and willingness to help get them home, takes that jump with Captain Thán seconds behind him. Jumping feels like dropping through wind; lights swirl, it’s warm, and a soft buzzing encompasses you as you fall. You don’t feel the landing. One moment you’re falling, and the next, you’re in a new world.

A few hours pass before a similar elevator rises from below and to the left of the Ingress, stopping beside the platform. Ben and Thán step out unharmed.

It works, and everyone can temporarily go home. Will you jump?

COMBINE THE EXTREMES ( 05.01 and on )
The woman that greeted the crew and led them to the platform will allow anyone that wants to go home the opportunity to go. There’s only one catch: it’s not permanent. She’s worked for years to fix the Ingress so that she can return to her own home but hasn’t been able to make the trip an everlasting one. Everyone always comes back. Always. They go for a few hours, at first, but that amount of time increases with each visit.

The one guideline, she says, is that you can’t go alone. Each trip requires a partner, or it becomes too much for the mind to bear. These rules are simple: the world takes shape depending on who jumps first, but if crew go hand-in-hand and leap at the same time, the worlds combine. This new world will be populated with people that existed in both and may appear to be a jarring combination of both worlds. It may seem unusual, but if the woman is asked, she’ll explain that the combined world does exist as there are more universes than can be imagined. The Ingress tries to take the person to their own home, their original home, but when jumping together, it finds the closest possible match and deposits them there instead.

From that point on, you can travel the world together or split up, but remember, this world is a living, functioning world. It doesn’t matter if it’s the home of one crew member or a combination. You meet other people. You can get hurt. You influence and are influenced by others.

Be cautious, and enjoy your visit “home”.

LINGER ON ( 05.05 and on )
The more times the Amissis-Re Ingress is visited, the more it seems that your trips last longer and the experience becomes even more vivid. More real and harder to distinguish from the current reality that you know. It’s difficult to explain why, but you get the feeling that maybe if you went without the aid of the host, that perhaps you’d be able to stay. Forever. It takes some subterfuge, but in time, you see your chance: she’s nowhere in sight, and you take it.

The world you are in now is completely your own, whether another crew member accompanied you or not. The people you know are there, everything around you is exactly as you remember. A few hours pass, and you don’t feel that familiar tug, that invisible hook at the base of your spine that signals that your visit is over. Even more time goes by, and you’re still in that world, your home. When the first day has passed, you begin to question if you’ll ever go back, or if life on the Moira was all a dream. The person with you won’t be able to convince you otherwise, and they’ll start to feel less real, a stranger that you used to know.

There’s only one way to go back to the Moira. Someone from the other side has to come in and retrieve you both. Once in, contact with a third will jump-start a link through the Ingress, and it will pull all crew back to the platform.

"What, so you're saying it's fate? No escaping it?" She didn't sound frustrated, per se, but certainly incredulous. She'd never thought of things like fate or any of that before now, and she didn't want to entertain the idea that she was fated to die and become what she was now. "I've looked at it more like unfortunate circumstance." It was her own mistake to trust the man who made her this way, but it was certainly his choice to go against the rules the Camarilla laid out.

"If I sit around and start contemplating whether this was by my own choice or design, or something...someone or something handed to me, I think I'd start having a mid-life crisis. And I'm not old enough for that." Ava gave him a long and thoughtful look. "And I'd like to think there would be an option to escape it. You say you're stuck...but can't you dig your way out?"

[Free from Megatron's grip, Tarn gives his throat a quick massage to get the energon flowing properly. He gathers to his feet to follow after Megatron, wavering slightly as his head spins from the residual effects of his brain module being choked of energon.

Stepping into the shadow of an extensive maze of electrical conduits feeding power to the ingress, Tarn lunges in an attempt to pull the Autobot close.]

I'm done playing these ridiculous games. This ends now.

[He manages to get close enough the he can whisper the last sentance.]

A relatively familiar face earns a lighter smile from the boss monster. Razputin she has seen around the ship and pestered on some degree to take care of himself. "Not entirely, I must admit." She tilts her head watching the portal for a moment before glancing back down at the ten year old.

"I am curious, not quite the best motivation to take a risk akin to this."

"I mean there are people in my world born into a sort of... well, I'll be honest, I never liked predestination myself. But they seem to be into the idea."

The Philosophers, the Patriots- their urges to "make the world one", and the horrible lengths they were willing to go to do so. They might as well have been a cult. And like her own topics, enough of an issue to require veiled language. Big Boss, Ocelot? Both of a sort of military royalty. Trained and loved by the best and most revered.

While Miller's father had his own name, he was a bastard child in terms of that fate, already written for him without a choice.

"Trying to." Dig his way out that is. And... probably in the middle of a mid-life crisis, much to his shame. "I take it you've not gotten very far away from your own unfortunate circumstances yet."

[Len's had the experience of a speedster "flashing" him to another place... it's not particularly pleasant, but he doesn't really want to be left behind.] No sense in making you wait for me. [He wonders if this kid's methods are similar to Barry's, the split-second dizzying movement, suddenly finding himself in another place...]

And running's all well and good, if you've got what you came for, first.

He holds his hands up, pretending to shield his face. It's not necessary, since it won't really hurt him, but he's playing along anyway. For fun. It's almost easy to forget they're on some weird version of her home and not just goofing off on the ship.

At least until she speaks up again. He perks his head up, then heaves himself to his feet.

"Awesome. I'm game!"

[ Tarn's assaults on his spark leave him too sluggish to properly maneuver away from his lunge. All he can do is brace for impact, his legs resisting on stubbornness alone. Unlike before, he slides back quite a ways, metal screeching beneath his feet. Tarn's whisper tears through him as he grits his teeth, the attacks now starting to send stronger lances of pain through his entire frame.]

[His own vision starts to get hazy as his spark begins to falter. He looks up at Tarn after a few heavy plumes of condensation cloud the air between them. With how much weaker his grip had gotten, it wouldn't take much more before Tarn could easily gain the upper hand.]

[Beneath the limbs struggling to keep him at bay, he merely had a sly smile left for the Decepticon as energon from an earlier wound begins to bleed freely from his mouth.]

"Yes," Cyclonus says, then waits as Miller makes his call. He's so tired. He was never so tired so quickly the first time he was claimed by the Dead Universe. But then he had been a part of it for six million years that time. Perhaps it was just a matter of soaking up more of that malevolent energy.

"The Dead Universe despises life," he explains once the call is finished. "So it either consumes or converts it."

"Gee, Nihlus, taking me back to your place already? You haven't even bought me a drink."

Allison feels embarrassed after she says it and sweats a little. What is play-flirting with friends? How do?

She quickly brightens up at the magic word, though. "Shopping??"

Yeah, the Moiran uniform isn't exactly high fashion. Because Allison sure knows a lot about fashion. Yep. "Um, yeah I'm ready, but I don't have any money with me? And they probably wouldn't take my cash here anyway..."

[Robin was so independent and mature most of the time that sometimes Allison kind of forgot that she was also just a little girl.

A little girl who's been through some serious shit.]

That's a real shame. You're so smart, and resourceful, and brave... and cute as a button. [She pinches one of Robin's cheeks gently.] I'm sure she'd be proud of you. I bet they'd all be so proud of you for keeping on .

It's a social network, you- never mind. I should take you to my world just to show you what you're missing.

[She's not going to because home would make her sad, but she can imagine.]

[Oh no, that hit her right in the heart. It brings up memories of everything she did in the hopes of being like her mother, and of how she did say she was proud of Robin before she died. It was something Robin had wanted to hear for her entire life - but when it came time to actually hear it, the moment was so bittersweet.

Robin let's out a choked sob.
]

I-I like to think so too.

[They all really wanted her to make it, she knows. And so far she's done a pretty good job of doing just that.

She wipes her nose on her arm like the gross, crying child she is before she speaks again.
]

There was one other person I wanted to tell you about... His name was Jaguar D. Saul.

[And so, the origin of Robin's false identity is revealed. She feels a little bad for not mentioning him earlier, actually.]

H-He saved my life, when the island was burning. An-and he was my friend...

[ AWWW, LUKE. it's clear from miles's beaming face that he takes that sentiment to heart. he loves his shitty planet, so much, and usually galactics think it's just an ass-backwards planet full of barbarians. well -- ]

Well, you haven't met the people. [ he's joking. mostly. well, there is a reason he wanted ship duty so badly. but miles loves barrayar and its people, for better or for worse, even if its society has tried its level best to trample and suffocate him. he's still proud to call barrayar his home -- it's a part of him, just as much as his own skin. ]

Come on, I'll show you around. I grew up here -- sort of -- we split our time between Vorkosigan House here and our residence in the capital. My father's Prime Minister, so most of his work is over there, but he's the district Count here, too. And my mother's got plenty of philanthropy projects going out here as well.

I've met one of them. [He gestures toward Miles with a smile.]

[Now that he can tear himself away from the scenery, he notices something about the houses. The architecture is... off. It's not what he expected at all. He frowns. Maybe he'll ask Miles later.]

[Anyway, he's still talking. Luke tries to pay attention; it's not that Luke finds him boring, simply that he's always had a short attention span, and gaping at the local flora is a magnificent distraction.]
He's a politician and a count?

[It sounds like Alderaan, a core world and bastion of civilization in his galaxy. He stands up a little straighter.] Wouldn't that make you...? [Something? He's not sure how their nobility works, but isn't that thing usually hereditary?]

[ wtf luke how are you so good ]

He used to be a solider, but he retired. [ a wry grin. some retirement. some people just don't know how to stop. it's kind of a vorkosigan family trait.

but talking about his father is always...a bit of a sore spot. it isn't that he doesn't love his father -- he does -- it's just that his father is such a monolith in their culture. before he was prime minister, he was lord regent for sixteen years until gregor reached his majority, and before that, he was admiral count vorkosigan, the butcher of komarr and the putative mastermind behind escobar. miles has been trying to run out from under his father's shadow all his adult life. something in him goes slightly stiff. ]

His heir, yes. I'll be the next Count Vorkosigan after him. [ he hurries to add: ] But he doesn't have anything to do with my military career. That's all me.

[ he'd just like to be clear on that point. ]
t65: (ive had it)

[personal profile] t65 2016-06-03 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Luke nods attentively.] He sounds like a great man. [There's more envy in Luke's heart-- and his voice-- than he'd really like. He takes a moment to clear his mind. That wouldn't have stung if this place didn't make him dwell on his home, which is ridiculous because it's utterly unlike Tatooine. But maybe that's why the comparison springs to mind.]

[Whatever it is, it's unworthy. Luke tries to move past it.]

The military, hm? I almost joined the Imperial Academy when I was nineteen. I always wondered what would have happened if I had. [He'd probably be dead.] What's it like?

[ Jay smirks. ]

Oh, we're not exactly socialist back home, but the Orm like to prance around being something of a nanny state. Maybe one day they'll look away for long enough for us to finally gain independence ... but, ah. I'm not holding my breath, you know?

[ He takes the tea and the infuser and inclines his head to Allison in a shallow bow. ]

Why don't you join me, darling? I could use the company and, ah. You're not exactly swamped here ...

[ Jay moves closer to Frisk and resists the urge to put his arms around the child. This place is unsettling as hell. His skin crawls. ]

Er, what sort of lab? It gives off a very ... human experimentation vibe, if you'll forgive me for saying so.

[ Should he bring up human experimentation around Frisk? Does it matter? Frisk has been through a lot. They probably know. ]

[ Jay looks at the Girl, frowning a little. ]

I think the idea is that it's less lonely to go in a group. I don't know. Different cultures do things differently. But back home, death is ... very much a family affair.

And that's "psychopomp", darling. One who escorts the dead to whatever lies beyond.

Do you really not have gods? Gods are everywhere. They might just not be showing themselves to people here.

We'll just wing it. Y' see somewhere you wanna stop, just let me know.

Eggsy startles, taking a step back when Gregor moves so quickly, on his feet and looking at Eggsy like, well, like he doesn't know him. He's no chicken, not afraid of someone just cause they're bigger, but Eggsy trusts Gregor and he put himself out there where he's concerned and he's kind of scary when he raises himself up the way he is, acting like Eggsy doesn't belong.

"Uh, quit playin' Greg. Ain't been back to the ship in a while, so I came lookin' for ya."

He swallows, shrugging his shoulders nervously, and then tries for nonchalance. Eggsy takes a few steps forward, sticking his hand out for Gregor to take.

"I missed ya and wanted to see if you wanted to eat lunch with me."

[J feels a hint of embarrassment burning the back of her neck when she's given the notebook and pens. This is really something she should have thought for herself instead of rolling it all on Peter's shoulders. She should know how to take care of this stuff better and herself.

The embarrassment doesn't last long as her attention is directed at the unfolded map in front of her. Thankfully nothing looks too different from what she remembers. She doesn't need to search for long before she spots New York on the map, drawing a circle around it. He's right that they're not too far. The trip wouldn't take more than five hours with a car or bus and Peter's much faster than either of them. There's a faint sign of hope sparking within J's mind. Maybe this could work out after all.

While she's not exactly expert when it came to reading maps -- she has always been much better navigating in cities than on road -- she still manages to draw a some kind of route for them.]

Mmm. It was made very clear to me at a very early age- duck, by the way- I'd never be as strong as my brother. People used to go to great pains to remind me of it.

[It's easier to talk about his past like this, distracted as he is by remembering every hidden trapfalls, every invisible pendulum that might give Loki a headache and probably be rather worse for Eggsy.]

And of course, the endless games of "chase Loki down and pay him back for all the things the Loki before him did". You have to be fast and smart, when you're fleeing adults.

[Which hadn't really been him. It had been the Loki-who-was, his dead and gone child self- although Loki had been on his shoulder, metaphorically.]
