[CLOSED]

Who: Ratchet and Peridot
What: CRIME. Trespassing. Property damage. Peridot and Ratchet are breaking into one of the infinite number of locked rooms on the ship.
Where: Starting at the Mero deck, ending with SPACE JAIL, with some troublemaking happening in a random room near the library in-between.
When: Ass o’clock in the morning on October 27th or. Y'know. whatever equivalent space date that is.
Warnings: None!

It’s the dead of night when she slips out of her room and comes to call. Fortunately, Peridot’s roommates are likely familiar with her habit of coming and going at weird hours of the night, by now; that’s the curse of sharing a cabin with an inorganic entity that doesn’t require sleep.

Sneaking in to her chosen partner-in-crime’s cabin, on the other hand…

Lucky that he resides on the same deck that she does. Surely, he will be so pleased to be invited to take part in this expedition of hers. With absolutely no prior warning. At 3AM.

She creeps into the cabin and up to his bed with surprising stealth, taking care not to wake his roommate (which, side note, she almost bungles horribly when she goes to the wrong bed at first, and almost attempts to rouse poor Tali by mistake. Noticed the lack of orange fur in the nick of time). One disembodied finger floats out to jab the sleeping Lombax hard on the cheek

“Ratchet… Ratchet," Peridot hisses at barely a whisper. Wake up, furball.

“Wh-” Ratchet was in a deep sleep and didn’t so much as hear Peridot until her one of her weird fingers pokes him in the face. Why could he never get full, uninterrupted night's sleep on this ship? He groggily slaps at the hand, sitting part way up. It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust in the dark and he squints at Peridot.

“...how did you get in here?” He pauses, glancing over at Tali, only to see that she's still asleep; or at least as far as he can tell. "Why are you in here?"

Ratchet just stares blankly back at her, an awkward silence ensuing until he nods, forcing a smile.

“That’s, uhm. That's great, Peridot. Really great...”

If you're expecting on-the-ball critical thinking, Peridot....don't wake people up in the middle of the night.

Ratchet stares after her, shaking his head at her….locomotive choice.

“Wait, what are y-” Ratchet cuts himself off abruptly, his whisper sounding altogether too loud in the dark room. Instead, grumbling, he crawls from the bed, reaching underneath it as he does, hopping on one foot and then the other as he puts on shoes and stumbles after her. He’s almost out of the room before he turns back to grab a gun, haphazardly tucking it under his arm. It’s only after he closes the door behind him that he speaks again, this time in a somewhat less careful whisper. “Go where, exactly? ”

“Well, it's not like we set an exact time or...or...you know, we didn't even set a day!” Ratchet matches her impatient tone, following after with a shrug. “I could've been awake if we had.”

“Okay, okay.” Ratchet rolls his eyes, although It really wasn’t that much of a bother at this point. They had discussed it, and now that he was actually awake, he’s pretty on board with the plan.

As they approach, he recognizes the hall with the locked doors; pretty much everyone on board had a one point or another probably wandered down here and tried their luck with the doors. It was definitely an object of curiosity, if nothing else, and he imagined there had to be a reason for so many locked doors. You didn't just dedicate a whole wing to locked rooms for no good reason, right? He turns to one of the first ones, looking closely at the lock. Sure enough, it was nearly identical to the locks on their rooms...which he’s sure Peridot is aware of. He looks back over at her.

“You wanna break into one of these? Which one? There has to be a hundred of them...”

"Uh huh." If Ratchet sounds unconvinced that she hadn't just picked the first door she'd laid eyes upon...it's because he is. Not that it matters...every door really was was just as good as the next until they opened it, so they might as well start at random.

He tries the panel next to the doorframe, just to be sure. It's just as locked as expected. Stepping aside, he gestures at the door.

"Alright. It's your show."

Ratchet doesn't like her sudden nervousness. She seemed to know what she was doing - she'd definitely proven the theory by breaking and entering into his own room, although admittedly the security on their actual rooms seemed to be minimal at best. If she was having doubts, this was really not the time to be exploring them.

"What d'you mean, should open?" Ratchet gives her an incredulous look, before shaking his head. "Well, forget it, it's too late now. Just hurry up and open it...We'll deal with what happens, when it happens." He makes a go-on gesture with the gun in one hand. Safety first.

Given that he half expected an alarm to go off - or worse - when she touches the two wires together, Ratchet is pleasantly surprised when the door opens as if nothing illicit was going on at all.

"Not bad, Peridot," he says, quite sincerely, before moving past her to peer into the room. It's...dark. Really dark. He takes a step into the room, gun first; not that he expects any trouble, but, call it force of habit. He waits for his eyes to adjust before moving any further in, wary of tripping over or running into anything. The light from the hallway illuminates little, but there are glints of light in the dark, bouncing back off of reflective surfaces of some kind.

"Is there a light? I can't see anything..."

Ratchet jumps when the light comes on; part at the surprising sight of humanoid shapes he wasn’t expecting and partially in reaction to Peridot’s response...he spends exactly two seconds thinking she’d seen something he hadn’t before realizing that no. She’s just being a weenie.

“Whoa. This is….not what I was expecting.” Ratchet lowers his gun, taking a step closer to one of the nearest statues. What had been he been expecting? Weapons? The explanation to some sort of illicit plot? A closet where the captains hung their human disguises when they weren’t wearing them? In reality, he’d mostly expected to find nothing. Definitely not this.

He leans close to one of the statues; they’re almost transparent...a fact that makes their crystalline features in the green light all the more eerie. He wondered absently what they were made of, although he doesn’t know enough about minerals or gems to even begin to guess. Glass seemed like the most likely, but who knew?

“What do you suppose these are for?” He says to Peridot without looking back in her direction. "It doesn’t seem like a room full of delicate glass statues has much of a place on a spaceship."

Ratchet's shoulders raise at the crunching sound, and he freezes. So much for their presence going unknown.

"What are you doing!? he demands through gritted teeth, as if the answer isn't obvious. He gives her a disbelieving look over his shoulder, glancing down at the broken statue and Peridot's precarious stance. "Don't touch anything!"

Oh no.

"Oh no."

Ratchet makes a futile move towards Peridot, arm outstretched, but he's nowhere near close enough to keep her from falling into the sculpture, and its all downhill from there. He can only watch in abject horror as the large - and probably expertly crafted - statue shatters into million inexpert shards, an ear-splitting crash that half the ship could probably hear accompanying it.

If Ratchet looks like he's frozen in disbelief....it's because he is. Complete, and utter disbelief. At what is happening. Right now, right here. What led to this? What led to this exact moment? Imagine the millions of tiny, insignificant and improbable things that all had to occur, at just the right time, in just the right order, for this exact thing to be happening, in this exact way, right now. All the decisions. All the mistakes.

Ignoring Peridot's panic completely, he picks up a piece of the glass, staring at it for a long time in silence. He looks around the room again, at the shattered statues, dropping the piece back to the floor.

"Uh yeah, we should definitely go."

And pretend this never happened. Never speak of it again.
