[closed] I've been frozen for almost a month
Who: Wash and Snake
When: 3/16
Where: Mero Deck, Room 008
What: After being in cryo for almost a month, Wash finally bumps into one of his roommates. Questions ensue.
Warnings: None yet.
[ After what felt like a particularly long shift in the kitchen, Wash is finally heading back to his room. He's considering a nap, given how early he'd had to get up to make it to his duties on time. And somehow, working with food always managed to make him sleepy. Maybe it was the monotony of the job, or just the plain simple fact that he had to get up so early. Whatever the case, he's tired when he reaches the door to room 008 on Mero Deck.
Sliding it open, he wipes a hand down his uniform front, just in case there might still be any food clinging to it, then casts a glance around the room. He doesn't want to disturb if either of the other two are still sleeping, but it looks like he's only come home to one of them there, and certainly not asleep. Eyebrows raising, it takes him a minute to figure out how to wave in greeting to the other man in the room. ]
Morning, Snake. [ That name still feels weird to say seriously... But all the same, it's kind of nice to see the guy again. Even if his three weeks in cryo felt like no time at all, the whole time he's spent catching up on what he'd missed made it feel like he'd been missing for ages. Which made it seem like he hasn't seen any of the familiar faces around the ship in forever. ] ...How're you?

so sorry for the delay on this!!
As far as Snake's concerned, that place is bad news. There's been no concrete explanation provided for why certain crew members are put into stasis for weeks at a time, or what's done to them while they're unconscious. That man he'd spoken to when he first arrived, Bruce Banner, is supposedly assigned to keep a watch on the people who are in cryo, but how much can he really do?
When the door opens on this particular morning, Snake's expecting Scott. When it's Wash who enters instead, he sets aside the work he'd been doing to clean out his M9 and then pushes himself to his feet. ]
Wash. [ Snake takes a step closer and looks Wash over, searching for any sign of injury or anything else that might be wrong. Nothing immediately pops out at him on that front. ] When'd you wake up?
no worries! I told you there was no rush at all <3
A few days ago. ...It's kind of funny that we haven't run into each other sooner than this, actually. [ But Wash has been spending a lot of time out of the room, and avoiding sleep. Since his recent talk with Texas, things have been...complicated, to put it lightly, and one of those complications includes horrible nightmares. So, to avoid them, he's generally really late to bed, and awake really early in the morning. That would probably explain why they haven't crossed paths, he supposes. ] Sorry for disappearing like that for so long. I'd have given some notice, but I didn't even get any. It was all really sudden.
[ Stepping a little further into the room, he lets the door slide closed behind him. There aren't any injuries or signs of any such thing on him because...well, the cryo process was pretty straightforward. All that had happened was that he'd been frozen. The only thing that might look wrong with him is the fact that he may possibly look really tired because of the dark circles under his eyes. Beyond that though? Physically very healthy. ...We won't go into mental healthiness. ]
Were the cats okay while I was gone? Again, I didn't mean to leave them on you guys, being put in cryo just sort of happened.

There's not any reason for Wash to apologize for something he had no control over, but Snake's disapproval about that only shows through a slight frown as he studies Wash, looking for any sign of ill effects. But like the other people who've been in cryo who Snake's spoken to, there's no real sign that anything ever happened. No muscle atrophy, nothing.
All the same, it's pretty obvious that Wash hasn't been sleeping, but Snake can understand why he'd be reluctant to do that after being out for weeks. ]
Yeah, they were fine. [ The kittens in question start coming out of hiding at the sound of their owner's voice, but Snake doesn't pay them much mind. ] Have you run into Scott yet? He moved in while you were out. [ Snake's guess is that Scott and Wash will get along just fine, but it seems worth asking all the same. ]
now it's my turn to apologize for taking so long l-lmao...
[ Wash smiles a little, and it spreads further as the tiny cats appear. Scooping the nearest one up, he dotes on her, giving her gentle pets and scritches, though his attention is very quickly drawn back to Snake upon hearing the question. ]
Not yet, no. I guess you're not the only one I've missed running into so far, although I did think that the third bed looked like it had been used. Good to know I'm not just losing it.
[ There's a short, nervous laugh at his own joke. It feels an awful lot like he's losing it lately, even if it's not exactly because of the bed thing. Looking over at the bed in question, he continues giving the kitten in his arm absent-minded attention.
He can't believe that not only has he gone so long without running into Snake, he's managed to completely miss meeting their new roommate. His schedule must be more messed up than he even realized... And clearly his attention span has been short, if he's managed to miss a new, sleeping figure in the third bed when he wakes up so early in the mornings. ]
What's he like? I mean, he's not disruptive or anything, is he?
post-hiatus tag, totally okay if you drop!
One of the kittens pauses at Snake's foot and mews at him until he sighs and bends down to pick it up. The pets are Wash's, but Snake has had to take care of them while he was asleep, so a few of them are attached to him now. There's not much he can do about it. ]
He's... he has pet ants. Not really sure why, but they seem to go with him wherever he goes, so it's not as disruptive as it sounds.
He's nice enough. A little on the eager side. [ Kind of like Wash, actually. Snake shrugs as he idly pets the kitten crooked in his arm. ] You'll probably get along.
just replies anyway tbh
They can be like platonic cat dads together. When Snake goes on to talk about Scott, it pulls Wash back into the moment and the conversation at hand. That's...certainly more interesting than he'd thought the guy would be... If "interesting" is the right word to use, that is. ]
Pet...ants? Like ants, the insect ants? [ Just. Kind of wearing a skeptical look now. ] And they follow him.
[ Right. Okay. That's gonna need a minute to just settle with him. Pet ants is not something he's ever heard of before, especially not ones that go wherever a person goes. ]
You think? That'd be good. I mean, obviously it would be good, because having a roommate you don't get along with would be uncomfortable. [ Stop talking. ] I'll, uh. Have to try to actually meet him soon.

Wash is just as baffled by Scott's gimmick as Snake is; all he can do is shrug. ] Don't ask me, I don't get it any more than you do. [ It's something he's had to accept, and if it's a choice between someone being eccentric and a complete asshole, Snake knows what he would go with. ]
You'll run into him soon enough. [ Keeping track of everyone's hours isn't the easiest thing here on the Moira, where any sense of time is nonexistent beyond what their MIDs tell them. ]
You caught up on everything else? [ Snake goes to take a seat, taking the kitten with him and then letting it flop onto his bed. ]
no subject
Yeah, I guess... [ Still scratching his head over ants, though. As Snake moves off to sit down, Wash mirrors the action. There's no point in just standing around, right? He'd come back to the room to be comfortable, anyway. So, stepping over to his bed, he settles in. The kitten in his arm squeaks a meow, and he scratches her head gently. ]
More or less, I think. It doesn't seem like too much happened while I was out. Nothing horrific or life-changing, anyway. --Which is good. It would be more than a little awkward to come back in after something like that and...not have been there to understand what happened.
[ He realized about halfway through that sentence that he's probably talking too much, so the last half comes out sheepishly, his gaze dropping down to focus on the kitten he's holding. ]

Still, the damage is already done and Wash seems to have come to terms with it as best he can, so that's something. ]
Who knows what kind of side effects there are after going into those cryo chambers. You should keep an eye on it, let me know if anything seems off.
[ While that might sound like concern, Snake's main motive is to gather information in case he ever ends up in the same situation. It's frustrating to know that there's apparently no way to prevent it. ]
no subject
[ That takes Wash by surprise because it does sound like concern to him. It's nice though, knowing that his roommate might be concerned about him after his time in cryo. Makes him feel less like a nuisance, for sure. ]
I don't think there'll be any more side effects, though. We've got cryo where I'm from and I've never heard of any real problems with it, aside from being unpleasant to wake up from. ...Then again, the system is different here, so I could be wrong.
[ The biggest difference he's found, though, is that they don't always seem to tell you why they're putting you in. It just kind of happens. At home, it was only used when a ship was travelling a very long distance to a different system, or something, and everyone was aware of why they were put into the pods. Wash gives a single-shoulder shrug and a quick nod. ]
I'll keep an eye on it, though.
want to wrap this up and then i'll tag your new log?
Any time that something is done to you against your will, particularly something that leaves you unconscious for long periods of time, there's reason to be worried.
At least he's put the thought into Wash's head, though. Snake nods. ]
Good. In the meantime, you should focus on reorienting yourself to everything going on here.
[ It's not the warmest "welcome back," but it's there all the same. ]
sure thing! we can consider it wrapped here
[ Nodding his agreement, Wash continues scratching the kitten in his arms behind the ear, shifting to glance at his MID to get an idea of the time. It's later than he realized already, so maybe there's no time for a nap. Which is probably for the better. ]
Speaking of reorienting, I should probably get to work.
[ Sanitation is not a particularly well-manned job on the ship, and him being out for so long could not have been very helpful. Standing up again, Wash carefully sets the kitten on his bed before heading to the door. ]
I'll see you later, probably.
[ It's something of a weak joke, considering how long it had been between his waking up and them actually running in to each other this time. There's a flash of an amused smile, a quick wave, and he's out the door on his way down to sanitation. ]
