The diner didn't serve breakfast, though understandably there still had to be someone there relatively early. Prep work needed to be done: goodies baked, beans boiled, dough kneaded, pickles sliced, and so on. Nyx wasn't really a morning person but he didn't mind taking the early shifts. One benefit was that he could play music as loud as he wanted to and sing along while he worked without worrying about anyone interrupting his (non-existent) musical talents.
This morning in particular a song with a heavy beat and danceable melody came on, which had Nyx not only singing along but dancing back and forth around the kitchen as he put together the ingredients for the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Personally he hated the taste of the pie, but it sure did smell wonderful baking. He was in a good mood, and entirely unaware that he hadn't locked up the diner after himself, nor did he hear any sounds of anyone coming in.

Nights like this reminded him of the bar he and Libertus ran back home. It was dark outside, there were only a few stragglers left eating or drinking, and the mood was super mellow. He was tired; it had been a long day. It had been a profitable day though and Nyx was pretty sure that Kaz Grumpyface Miller might even be pleased with the ledger. No new customers had come in during the past half hour and he began his nightly cleaning ritual.
Nyx might have not had the most spotless apartment but when it came to his job, he was meticulous. He loved the idea of every piece of cooking equipment from the stove to the spatula being shiny and glittering clean. There was something therapeutic about it. Or, maybe, he told himself that because going home alone to an empty apartment really sucked after awhile. Whatever the reason, Nyx was not afraid to use all the elbow grease he had to make sure the stove had not even a micro-atom of grease anywhere on it.

When he finally speaks, the corner of her mouth lifts in a smile. He must be okay. "Oh?" she asks, laughing along with him. "Maybe we can brainstorm some decorations for you! What are your interests?"
no subject
"What I mean is... The reason I picked my place is because it's its own decoration. I live in Region 4, so my apartment's underwater. It feels like living in an aquarium." That was an interest he didn't even know he had until that damned party before he came here.
Nyx gave a shrug. "I don't really have too many interests. Uh. I don't think working-out counts."

"Really? You live underwater? And there are fish and everything swimming past your windows?" Mei only takes a brief moment to breathe before she's back to asking him questions, despite the fact she hasn't actually let him answer any yet. "How does the air get to you down there? Is it scary to have all that water around you? Do you have any pictures of your place? Can I see?" And then, finally seeming to realize that she's not afforded him the chance to speak, and she's actually been leaning in towards him enough that she's barely on her stool, her face flushes and she sits back properly, adjusting her glasses and tittering nervously. "I mean, if you have pictures."
no subject
"Yeah, sure. I have a picture or two. Let's see."
Nyx took a moment to flip through the holographic displays on his TAB and soon pulled up a static image which he showed her. "That's the bedroom," obviously stated. Nyx let her look as long as she wanted to. "All kinds of fish, big and small, swim around all the time. They seem to be more active at night. My new favorite pastime is laying in bed at night and watching them. See here, there are tracks of light along the support beams, so even with all my lights out I can see up into the water. It's pretty cool."

Excited, Mei scoots her stool closer and gasps when she sees the image, clasping her hands together in delight. "It's more beautiful than I even imagined!" She's very fond of her apartment on Chioni, but they live under a dome there to protect them from the weather, and there are no parks or pretty sights outside her window; just research facilities.
"I thought it might be scary to have all that water on top of you, but it looks so peaceful! So relaxing. That's what I would do too: just watch the fish swim by, living their little fish lives." Once she's finished looking, she tilts her head to look up at him. "Is every room like that, with a big window all around?"

"...honestly? It's a bit more expensive than I can afford but..." Nyx had wanted to treat himself and he did have a bad habit of being impulsive sometimes. The high rent meant he had to work extra jobs but he hardly minded that. It was good to keep busy.
"I hear rent's pretty affordable on Chioni. Despite the dome, you like living there?"
no subject
Mei takes a moment to sip her water before answering his question. Her burger's getting cold too, but she doesn't mind. She loves conversation.
"I like my apartment, but Chioni isn't a place to socialize or anything. It's just a place to work. I have to shop for all my supplies here, and all my friends are here." She shrugs her shoulders before admiting: "Actually, it gets kind of lonely over there."
