and there's a storm brewin'; ota;
Who: "Alexander" and YOU!
When: Second half of the month.
Where: Mostly Kauto - see prompts.
What: Catch-all log for the sad Scottish Dad.
Warnings: N/A
[ Kauto; St Monmouth; ]
[ Jamie mostly takes the storm in stride. After all, that's the life of a farmer - dealing with the vagaries of nature. He's handled far worse. One big storm isn't nearly as bad as, say, years of famine and hardship, wondering if you'll even be able to feed your family tomorrow, or next week, or through the long winter months.
So he does what any good farmer would do after a force of nature strikes - he puts on a sturdy pair of boots and heads out to assess the damage and start fixing what can be repaired - fences, injured animals, something on fire that needs to be doused, whatever. His first stop is the stable - because if it's on fire, the horses need to be released immediately to prevent any deaths. After that, he'll prioritize based on life, first, and then property damage.
None of the animals will die if Jamie can help it. ]
[ Kauto; Region One; market; ]
[ Jamie sticks out like a sore thumb in the city - nor is he terribly comfortable here, though he hides it well behind a relatively blank face. It's easy to ignore the weird things about this place at St. Monmouth - he can pretend the sweets on the trees are just strange alien fruit, and otherwise bury his head in the sand. But in the city, he can't avoid it as much, and eventually he does have to come to the market to purchase the items he can't make himself (and which he'd rather Ronan not magically conjure out of thin air). Besides, he has a little money now - might as well put it to good use and see if there's a decent blacksmith around.
Of course, he has no idea if there are any blacksmiths in this godforsaken place. So there's likely a very tall Scotsman standing around, metaphorically scratching his head as he tries to figure out where to go for some decent tack and horseshoes. ]

With the area she tends to spend a lot of her time exploring needing some help and work, she tries to do what she can in secret. Today's exploring leads her to a farm where there's a good deal of damage, but Laura's interest is primarily upon the animals. She goes to the stable first, quietly slipping inside to start letting out the horses to lead them to safety. It's while she's in the middle of doing this that she realizes she's not alone.
There's a man here too, working to get the horses out of the stable. Completely ignoring the fact that the stable is on fire, she stands in the middle of the smoke and cautiously eyes him. Making a snap decision, she assumes this is his land.
Memories of the Munson family and their farm fill her mind, and she feels more determined to make up for their loss by helping this man.]
This way.
[Her accent is thick as she speaks up, pointing behind her.]
The others are safe already.

Ye should leave, lass. I can take care of them from here. The fire will only get worse, and I'll no have ye gettin' harmed.
no subject
No. I will not be hurt. You are the one in danger.
[At least not in any lasting way. Stubborn as always, she moves to try and keep helping him.]
no subject
For better or worse, there's no time to stop and argue about it, and he's got horses to save - the lass can hopefully know when to save herself. ]
Fine - if the smoke starts to choke ye, or ye canna see, get out.
[ The fire isn't too extensive yet - if they can move quickly, they may even be able to douse it in time to save most of the stable itself.
He moves with surprising quickness, given his size, and begins expertly shooing horses out of their stalls and towards the open doors where they can breathe properly and hopefully not trample any unwitting passers-by in their nervousness. ]

By the time they get all the animals out, her eyes go to the fire. Unfortunately, her knowledge of putting out fires isn't really all that great.]
Is there water nearby?
no subject
[ Jamie's eyes are watering from the smoke and soot in the air, but the fire isn't too bad (yet). He points to show her the way, and points out the troughs in question. ]
no subject
Scaling the ladder is easy work, and she hurries to the troughs to try and figure out what to do. In the end, she manages to drag and dump them, letting it spill down and over onto the hay.
The speed and strength that she moves with show that she isn't likely a normal eleven year old, but she doesn't really stand still long enough to let him say anything about it. At least she doesn't until she makes sure that the hay's all wet and less likely to catch fire.]
What next?
[Her eyes scan him over. Maybe it's time to drag him out of here for his own good.]
no subject
Even the way the girl moves only gets a vague blink out of him. He's been here a couple of months now, long enough to figure out that a lot of the people here, even the ones who look normal, aren't.
In any case, he suspects it would be rude to just ask her how she can do things that even a grown man isn't capable of in his world. ]
Now we find some buckets, and douse what we can, and hope it doesna spread further.
[ He rubs the soot and sweat off his face with the hem of his shirt and goes rooting around for the buckets in question. ]

It's then he sees Jamie again. It's been a while since the strange guy had fed him pattrich but he's easy enough to recognize. ]
Need any help?
no subject
I dinna ken. [ He glances critically at Adam's physique. ]
Can ye lift heavy logs?
no subject
Can lift just fine. [ He's done manual labor all his life after all. ]
no subject
[ Jamie waves Adam over, crouching down to get his arms under a branch. He has no super powers, no magic, no mutations. He's just a forty-something Scotsman, and yet, he's very strong for what he is. He could probably do this himself - as he said, it'll just be quicker with two people. ]
no subject
Jamie's probably much stronger than Adam but he tries to share the burden equally in taking care of the branch. ]
no subject
I thank ye, for the help.
no subject
[ He's half muttering as they move the branch, and the task isn't particularly difficult between the two of them at least. ]
no subject
[ Just another reminder that Jamie is living with a bunch of kids - who, for the most part so far as he can tell - have never had to work or labor much in their lives. ]
If so, I can find plenty for ye to do.
no subject
[ Adam shrugs. He wouldn't have chosen the word bored himself but it works close enough. He's had plenty of experience with labor since he was a child, though and he still works long and unnecessary hours at the auto shop here. ]
I don't mind helping.
no subject
May as well start cutting it up, for firewood.
[ He's got a larger axe, for chopping the big logs. ]
If I had no kin to be concerned for, back home, I wouldna mind stayin' here for a time.
[ He adds this after a moment - a rare personal detail, from one who generally keeps pretty close-lipped about himself. ]
no subject
He glances up at him again, perhaps the surprise showing on his face for a mere moment before he goes back to work. ]
What is home like? [ Adam doesn't really have family anymore so he doesn't ask about that specifically in case the question gets turned back to him. ]
no subject
And stubborn, as her people. Have ye been to the highlands?
no subject
I never been anywhere really...
no subject
Surely ye've heard of it? Or are ye from another place entirely?

Oh, aye, I've heard of it, though it's not yet called that in my time. I've relatives in the colonies, though I've not been, myself.

[ Jamie shrugs a little. ]
It has a certain appeal.
