savrii traditions
⋆ Located in R3, the natives of this region have filled the air with love—quite literally. A special chemical released from the rare flowers that sometimes grow in the trees has bloomed, causing the moods of those who breathe it in to lift and their inhibitions to lower. The effects can range from causing someone who isn’t normally open to be very flirty to incensing an individual to make the worst decision of their life. Once an individual leaves R3, the effects of the gas will subside after about an hour. While visiting, however, join the natives in their annual Golden TangleSnake Hunt in an attempt to catch the yellow-tailed Tanglesnake and win a prize for your sweetheart!
the prompts
( OOC Info: If you thread out the investigation and you get to a point where you need clues or direction, then please PM savmods and we’ll give you some plot! This goes for both the heart and arrow sections of the prompt. )
⋆ Four Minutes. This one is what it says on the tin—a round of speed dating that occurs over the TABs and in-person. On the 20th, a notification pops up on all TABs noting a date and time (that evening) for all people to come to. At this event, TABs are synced up, and everyone who attends will be sat at tables with one other person. They will be given four minutes to get to know them. If you decide you want to see them again, mark yes on their profile on the TABs, and if not, hit no. Don’t worry though, whether you’ve got matches or not, the event-runners will be sending out random suggestions of who to go out with! If you accept, they’ll pay for a luxurious evening. At the end of the evening, all matches will be sent to your character’s TAB, and whether you pursue anything further is up to you.
( OOC Info: the speed dating event at the beginning is up to the player to decide the details. You can thread out random meetings or being matched up after or even a date that you arrange with a match a week from now. The sign-ups below are for the random match suggestions. If you sign your character up, they’ll be given a match and a date, completely paid for. )
⋆ Sleep On It. Even the Savrii seem to have an old wives' tale about finding one’s true love. A mixture of herbs were bundled together and placed under a pillow, allowing the person to dream of their soulmate that night. A Savrii, who found the tale romantic, synthesized a mixture of herbs that, when certain steps were followed, lets the user have a vision of themselves with the person that they can find the happiest life with. Step one: Take the herbs in hand and twist until the bundle snaps, it’ll smell of lavender and honey. Step two: Lift pillow and place bundle underneath. Step three: Sleep. Step four: Not all results are conclusive; you may have seen your soulmate, someone you hate, someone you have strong feelings for, or some might have dreams that make no sense at all. The only common thing is that the dream will only feature one other person. Step five: Go find that person and tell them what you saw! Whether something comes of this or not is up to fate.

[ It was a calculated risk, pulling Alan aside to interrogate him about exactly what was going on before the effects of whatever was spiking their drink wore off. The fact of the matter was that Nihlus knew the scale of information favored him: there was a lot Alan doesn't know and a lot he wouldn't know to ask.
The answer that that comes out of his mouth, however, actually makes him falter. It's a sudden freeze, standing at the edge of the crowd as people milled about past them.
He takes a slow, deep breath and tightens his grip on Alan's shoulders. ]
Describe to me the exact function of this AI, Alan. [ Nihlus' voice drops low and deathly quiet. ] Because Spirits help me, if this turns out to be a potential threat to people, the outcome will not be pleasant for you.

[He’s almost relieved when Nihlus interrupts him and prevents him from having to come up with a coherent response. That is, until he hears the rest of Nihlus’s demands. And that threat. Alan winces, his eyes darting to the side as if he’s looking for a way out. This would be a delicate subject on the best of days, exponentially moreso when he has to explain it to an angry turian, with only partial control of his own words.]
It’s not— I’m not trying to make something dangerous. [
Not that that’s stopped him before. Alan takes a deep breath, willing his mouth to maybe form words that don’t paint the situation in the worst way possible.] The AI would be able to communicate directly with users while existing as an individual program in-system, [he says slowly, as if that would afford him more control over what he says.] It would serve as a kind of link between programs and users so they could speak with one another through it—like a messenger, I suppose.[He wants to leave it there, but words keep tumbling out regardless.] It’s just… the closest thing we had in my world was a program called the MCP and it—he—was hopelessly glitched. That’s one of the reasons I made Tron the way I did: so he’d be able to keep the MCP in check. [Another wince there. It sounds a lot more callous knowing that Tron and the MCP were actual people pitted against each other. But then, Alan supposes, that only underscores the need for this kind of program.]
So no, I’m not trying to make anything that’s a threat to anyone, but… there’s been precedence for AI like this going wrong before… [Alan realizes that this pitch is not ending on a strong note and makes one final effort to wrest back control of the conversation. If he has to be honest, then he can at least focus on something positive, damn it.] But if it works, it could change everything on Earth. If people could talk to their programs and realize they were sentient, it could be the first step to users actually treating them like people.
[This time, the earnesty in those words isn’t entirely drink-induced.]

And then he finally, slowly eases his grip on the man's shoulder, stepping back to give Alan some space. Giving himself some space to think.
His fears about the AI being potentially dangerous to the general population was assuaged somewhat. His fears about it being used specifically against the Programs, however, was less so. ]
The creation of AI in my world was banned because an entire population of people were driven from their mother world by a machine uprising. These AI came to call themselves the Geth.
[ Folding his arms, Nihlus stops himself briefly. But only briefly: like Alan, he was currently suffering from the compulsion to speak and there's only so much he can do to stifle it without retreating completely.
That wasn't an option right now. ]
The truth is that their creators, the Quarians, mistook their newfound sentience for danger. The efforts to exterminate this new species of people, ended in a massive amount of casualties and eventually, the Quarian's exile. While the Geth had recorded all of this history, however, their creators smothered all traces of their mistakes and left the following generations to suffer in the dark.
[ Shepard's reports on the Geth had been... enlightening. Depressing, but enlightening. The sheer amount of suffering that had happened.... ]
The moment you open up this door between humanity and their creations... it is going to be a dangerous time for both of your species. Doubly so for all Programs. Because it won't just be a grid wiped out every time someone does general maintenance, Alan: you could potentially be ending their very existence altogether. Especially if others of your kind have the power to push such an agenda forwards.
[ Call Nihlus cynical, but you didn't survive very long being a Spectre by expecting the universe to be kind. And for all his hopes for them, the Spectre has seen enough of humanity to know that they're not spared from flaws. ]
This... 'MCP'. Tell me more about him. Why do you consider him glitched?
sorry for the wait!
Is this how it had started for them, too? With one person’s misguided idea about how to make things better? Alan had worried that his project might just lead to further exploitation; he hadn’t even considered that it might end in an attempt at complete and utter genocide. A genocide he knows is far more likely to be successful than that attempted by these Quarians.
He doesn’t say anything in response, only processes what he’s been told in silence. It isn’t until Nihlus asks his next question that Alan responds, not even bothering to fight the dwindling effects of the drink this time around.]
I didn’t have much personal contact with the MCP. I just heard stories. People said he spoke like a real person—that if you didn’t know any better, you might mistake him for one. [The program had been a source of curiosity, at first. Until it had begun to interfere in Alan’s own work.] I worked for a software company called ENCOM at the time. One of the company higher-ups, a man called Dillinger, saw it fit to install the MCP as a kind of company-wide administrator. It wasn’t long before it had almost total control over ENCOM’s servers and all the programs on it. And Dillinger just seemed to give it free reign. [Some old animosity creeps into Alan’s voice. It had been infuriating at the time, having some arcane piece of software watching over them, making nigh unquestionable decisions from on high while the rest of them could only wonder from afar.] It would lock whole swaths of people out of the server for no reason. Or it would “appropriate” programs—from our end, it would look like total deletion, though from what I understand now, it was… absorbing them. Adding their functions to its own. Trying to make itself more advanced, I suppose.
[It’s more chilling now, knowing what he does about programs. He can’t imagine what such an act would have implied in-system, where the programs the MCP was cannibalizing were real people trying to go about their lives.
At the very, very least, it means Alan can’t completely regret the actions her took to get rid of the program.]
I had a friend, Flynn… [This time, he actually takes care not to say more than he should.] After he told me that the MCP had appropriated his own programs, we worked together to destroy it. I’ve never seen an AI like it since. [That’s what Alan would be replicating—if he goes through with this. Nihlus has already given him plenty to think about in that regard.]
