i. open sesame [kauto, region 1] [It's almost anti-climactic. After months of space travel, danger, and promises of a return home, they've come... here. It's still an alien planet, sure, but after life on the Moira, it seems practically suburban. They’re expected to find homes, stock up on groceries, find jobs -- it all has an unpleasant ring of permanence to Alan, but it’s not like he has any alternatives.
He spends the first couple of days swinging between bitterness and relief. He feels lied to, let down, and yet... this does postpone a few crises he hadn't at all been looking forward to dealing with. Crises that had all but overshadowed thoughts of anything else, if he's honest. Afterwards, he tries to think about it more moderately; they'll still have a chance to go home, in time. Until then, he has time to think.
During this time, one can find Alan shopping for necessities, wandering Kauto’s business district, and… messing with his apartment door? At least he’s messing with the panel, a grapefruit-sized roughly orb-like shape hovering just behind him.]
Okay, try it now, [Alan says, presumably to the shape. And the shape… obliges?
”No-yes-no-no-yes-yes-yes-yes,” the shape rattles off in a buzzing, monotone voice. Alan looks at the door, is apparently displeased, and then looks back at the panel.]
Alright, [he sighs,] let me see why this isn’t working...
