"Let them in, and take them out."

In absentminded fashion, he wonders where she might be, until Carl's voice draws him back.]
No reason to apologize. It's been quite the ride for all of us. Charles was-- erm ... is my teacher back home? He's from a later time than I am, so he didn't really know who I was when I first arrived.
[It may seem late for him to notice, but since he's close enough, he's been given the chance to see that Carl has bandages around his face.] What happened to ... [he trails off, though, bringing his hand up to the right side of his face to rest at the spot just below his eye.
He's swift to lower the hand, marked blue cheeks tinting indigo with embarrassment.] Ach, I'm sorry! That was terribly rude of me, I ...
[There is no excuse, aside from social awkwardness.]
no subject
So ... you trust him then? Even with the time difference.
[And what's the saying: curiosity killed the cat, or maybe poking your nose into something makes karma come your way? Whatever it is, it's when Kurt seems to notice the bandages around his face and start to ask the question he hates most.
He gets why anyone would, but it doesn't stop the normal expression he had from turning upside down. He takes a hesitant moment to try not taking too much offence on the inside of himself, then visibly shakes his head, moving his gaze down.]
No... It's- I don't know. I just don't want to talk about it.
[Though he can't help but remember parts of how it happened all because of someone he thought was a friend and unfortunate circumstances.]
no subject
[He seems set in this choice, too, seen in the way his brow is creased with determination, although it fades almost instantly at the response he gets for asking about the bandages.
You graceless fool, he scolds himself, dipping his head in shame and clutching his arms around his waist. Normally, the cobalt-tinted mutant would have been far more delicate about approaching a subject like that, but he'd been unable to control his motor-mouth and as usual, the words had slipped out before his brain could catch up to analyze how they would sound when coming out.]
No, I completely understand. I shouldn't have ... [Kurt hesitates, draws a hand up to thread through his bangs, then turns away to hide his humiliation.]
I'm so sorry.
no subject
But, anyway, he couldn't care less about that anymore. His eye (or there lack of) is a sore subject and, really, the more the other teen apologizes for bringing it up, the more Carl feels- no wishes they could just stop and about something else. He grimaces and shakes his head at how the other reacts.]
It's fine. [Obviously it's not fine, but he's trying to move it along, you know. His head dips down just enough so his hat can cover his eyes from sight.] You don't have to keep apologizing.
I shouldn't have been watching you in the first place. Maybe I should go.
no subject
Kurt stays turned away, tightening his fingers around his hair and pulling. He doesn't understand why he has to be so awkward around people. Things had been easy when it came to performing in the circus - why couldn't it still be like that? Maybe because 'real life' situations weren't planned out and rehearsed.
While he's struggling through this inner turmoil, his attention is recaptured by Carl mentioning that he should go.] No, I--!
[And just like that, Carl is ducking beneath his hat, trying to hide his eyes. He almost bites the inside of his cheek hard enough to draw blood, but is quick to relinquish his hold on the skin so he doesn't let the sentence linger.]
Please, you don't have to go. I didn't mind you watching. [A brief pause.] Maybe you can help me?
[There's still a chance for him to turn around his pathetic attempt at a first meeting.]
no subject
What? [He doesn't know if he quite heard all that correctly, but it wasn't hard to understand what he could piece together. Which is why his body language was that of surprise and a manner that could otherwise have asked "you're serious?"
Carl stands there, replays and soaks in everything he just heard.] Help you how? [And yeah, maybe... a part of him is up for that, too. Helping or watching or just giving their meeting a second chance would probably be better to try than walking off feeling weird and a little put out by the whole. At least on a subconscious level he feels that way.]
no subject
You see, uhm ... [His features wilt at the sudden realization that his earlier idea probably wouldn't be much for either of them to work with; he had originally thought about them scrounging for useful gear together, but from what he could tell, it didn't look like many of the things were salvageable. Kurt can see that Carl is obviously bewildered by his offer and that means he needs to come up with something quickly before the lingering silence gets too awkward.
Well, he hadn't gotten to the room opposite of this one look for anything there yet.] The room across from this one hasn't been checked for any practical equipment that we can take with us. Would you like to search with me?
no subject
Kurt manages to come up with another idea, he can tell, when the other looks further back to room just ahead of room and changes what he was saying. Curiosity for what he originally was about to say lingers on his mind, though. However, he considers what was said for a moment.]
You want me to help you look? [He sounds surprised.] Um... well... I guess. If you really want to. Let's do that.
[Despite how weird this all is, he can't say no. Not to someone trying to make amends and not to there being a chance things could go better between them if he gives this a second chance.]
no subject
Of course, [he insists, allowing his smile to broaden once more,] it's one of the safest things we can do, being stuck in this building and all.
[Taking the initiative for once, Kurt turns on the ball of his foot and heads for the exit of this area, gripping the door-frame with one hand and motioning for Carl to follow him with the other. He carefully navigates their way to the room that's a few paces across the hall, leaning in to examine the space.
From what he can tell, everything seems to be safe enough and he hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary that might have been hidden away.] The room seems to be free of any surprises.
no subject
Noticeably Carl doesn't reply right away, but follows tentatively to peer into the room mentioned just a second ago. The whole time he is right behind Kurt without keeping too much distance but enough it may seem he is when in reality it is just a shorter stride. He is okay with leaning on the other side to check what is in the room.]
Looks pretty safe. [He acknowledges. Sometimes he thinks that's the only plus of these different worlds. No walkers.] So, what do you intend to do with this stuff anyways?
If it's the same stuff I saw before, I don't understand it or think it works anymore.
[The scatter of paper and busted up technology that's all around, he means.]
no subject
It's in his nature to be friendly, considering the sort of things he's suffered throughout his life. If he'd been deterred by something as simple as an unintended mistake, the blue boy probably wouldn't have any of the friends he currently does or any of the new ones he seems to be making. He doesn't want Carl to be upset with his ridiculous inquiry, although it had been quite the slip-up, so he's hoping to make it less nerve-wracking for the both of them.]
We can't really do anything with the broken stuff or a bunch of cups.
[He turns to look at the boy next to him, smiling ever so slightly, then shifting to step into the room.] I'm more looking for things like ...
[The sentence briefly trails off, but from the corner of his eye, he spots something poking out from beneath the bed and wastes no time rushing over to it. He kneels to reach beneath the frame and pulls out the almost threadbare blanket, holding it above his head with an excited laugh.] This! Well, it's not in the best of shape, but it's something that is still usable.
no subject
Heh. It looks like it could use a couple hundred stitches or maybe be used as a fishing net. [His tone cracks in amusement, but is far from judging the value of item. In fact, in his mind's eye it's actually a good find and good start to what they're doing. Collecting stuff for themselves or other people, right. Now that he thinks about it...]
What do you plan on doing with the stuff you find? [He asks curiously] It's a good idea. I just have more than enough for myself. Maybe we share with other people. Or trade what we find.
no subject
Trying to sew it back up might take a while, but a fishing net isn't a bad idea! [A soft laugh passes his lips at the tone of Carl's voice, his hands carefully folding the blanket into a more compact item to be carried. Kurt's brow furrows with contemplation at the question as he tucks the blanket beneath his arm and lifts the hand to his chin.]
Actually, I had thought about offering up the things I find to other people earlier. [He averts his gaze to the younger boy, fangs gleaming in another grin.] It would seem that we have a like-minded thought.
[The sharing, he means.]
no subject
Yeah, it doesn't look like it's bad, but it doesn't look warm enough to keep off the cold. If we find a lake or something it'd probably be strong enough to hold fishes. [He says confidently, sounding like he knows more than he actually does when it comes to fishing.
His smile grows a little more when the blue teenager admits they share the same idea. There was always something to be said about people who showed that they didn't just think about themselves, Carl feels. It gave him a good feeling.]
You did? I mean, it's a good idea looking out for everyone when we all already helping each other figure out how to get home. I thought about maybe a trade system too, but I wouldn't know where to start. [His attention veers off in thought a little, then slides back. He is about to add something in addition to his thoughts but he's caught a little off guard when he sees fangs and his smile fades out and back on his face. Takes him a second to adjust to looking at fangs. They're pretty cool once he isn't surprised, though.
Back to what he was about to say anyway.]
Uh... it doesn't really matter to me if I get anything back for the stuff I don't need though.
no subject
[Their mutual agreement to share what they find assures Kurt that Carl isn't one of those people that only take for themselves; he's met too many of those in his lifetime and it's rather refreshing to meet someone who thinks with the same good heart as himself.]
Mm-hmm. What gut would it do me to keep things that I don't need? It's rather selfish when I say it out loud, actually. A trade system would be a great plan, but ja, I wouldn't know where to start either. [He almost lifts his hand to cover his mouth, but once he notices Carl's quick recovery, he hesitantly lowers the arm to keep from hiding the fangs.
He knows he needs to get used to people being surprised by them, yet he always reacts with his own form of nervousness when someone is startled.]
Oh, no, I wouldn't expect anything back. If someone needed a blanket and I had more than one, I'd give it to them.
