"Let them in, and take them out."

[But that's about all they got right now.]
I think Cipher felt that way when they destroyed the MSF. All it did was create Outer Heaven, and dozens of other PFs. We both know the way to stop this was with warning. If one person can discover the Ingress, so can another. Murdering them before they can misuse it was never the answer.
[The obvious answer was stopping the misuse by educating them. Showing them how the Ingress was a living thing. Kaz looked at some distant point through the wall, nose wrinkling as he considered their utter lack of options. Sure, Miller in the future had been complicit in the destruction of Big Boss's work later twice over. But that was revenge; in the end, he had known better. And in the long run he had tried to teach his students to be better than him in the same breath that he was teaching them to survive.]
All it proves is that they're flawed. Far-sighted enough to create the Ingress, naive to think that they would be the only ones who would be able to access it.

Cut off one head, three more take its place, right? [ It's still surprising to hear someone as war-forged as Miller talk about finding another way, something that isn't related to violence, but Snake isn't about to argue the point. It's a matter of strategic thinking, too. Brute force isn't always the best way to accomplish something, as much as they might be trained for it. ]
I think there's probably some ego coming into the equation too. [ Isn't there always? It's the common tale. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should, and thinking they were the only ones advanced enough to make use of the technology had been the Savrii's first mistake.
Having made their way a good distance down the hall, Snake leans himself up against the wall and sighs, his shoulders deflating in frustration. ]
Well, we've gotta go through that portal anyway.
no subject
Probably. [He agrees with the statement of ego, with a similar train of thought.] We did see how dangerous the Ingress could be, but the people working on it here went into this knowing nothing.
[Venom and Big Boss, though, were ten years older than him and he clung to the notion of even partnership with them. He commanded men ten to twenty years his senior in Central America. And he tries to live up to the mentor that Snake had, but he can see right then how he and this man are nearly the same age, and right now both carry a lot of weight, a lot of responsibility that they are now realizing they may never meet.]
[But here he acts as a peer, a friend, and when he stands in front of him and settles his hands on his shoulders to reassure him, it's as that.]
We'll figure something out, Snake. We'll keep building ourselves up so we can get a foothold. We don't know what's through there. But we'll face it together. [They're not going into this alone. And to punctuate it, he pats him roughly where he held him.]
no subject
I'm not gonna assume they had only good intentions in mind, but... [ Slaughtering the scientists still seemed like an overreaction, and Snake doesn't think there's any way around that. He doesn't really want to hear the Savrii's excuses, either. Hence moving away from them to begin with.
It's not like he hasn't stared down plenty of unknowns in the past. This is on an entirely different level, but at least Snake isn't going it alone. He nods to Miller, shifting his grip so that he can settle his fist against Miller's chest, knocking it lightly. ]
I'll leave the building to you. [ It's not Snake's nature to draw other people under his lead, but Miller could pull it off. ] Just let me know where I can help.
no subject
[He backs off, giving David his personal space back as he's feeling a little more secure that he's going through with capable people.]
Do you know anyone else who's going to agree to this?
[Honestly he's expecting most.]
no subject
[ There isn't even safe passage off of the planet, not with the Moira crashed and most of the evac vehicles in similar states. Maybe someone smart enough to build a new ship from all the scrap could pull something off, but other than that, they're basically stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Of course, Snake has to ask -- or at least, he feels obligated to. It still takes him a few seconds to actually get the words out, though. ]
... Have you talked to Ahab?
no subject
He's not happy about these people, either.
[To be honest, for once Kaz thinks he's the only one unwilling to result to torture for answers in this situation. And really it's only because they're lacking in power to defend themselves properly.]
We're going to go. [He puts his hands in his pockets.] We've um... been doing a lot together lately. So I think it'll work out as a real partnership. [Not just what he and John had in the old days, something genuinely more reliable. Or at least he hopes.]
[Then a pause as he realizes how that sounded.]
We didn't do that- [Not to any great extent, anyway.] I mean we've just been doing a lot more cooperative work together and been okay with sharing each other's space for long periods of time.
no subject
There's definitely such a thing as too much information, and it's Miller's insistence on clarifying his original point that's more incriminating than anything else.
Snake doesn't really want to go there, though. Whether or not something's going on, he probably doesn't want to know about it. ]
Guess everyone's had to, since we've been camping out. [ He's definitely been in closer quarters with people than he would normally want, but it had been necessary. ] But it's good, you... uhh... working together. [ He averts his gaze. Why did he bring this up again? ]
no subject
[He had been worried about their partnership, though, that it might not work as a functional working relationship when they returned to the field with the full awareness of what each other was. Kaz, a man who could no longer subscribe to the dream of Big Boss. And Venom Snake, simply not Big Boss but trying to be (maybe?)]
[But they're doing fine and that's important.]
[So is the fact that he's not going to bail on this Snake, either.] If we're together it means that in an emergency we can work as a reliable team.
no subject
If it came down to it, Snake would put his reservations aside and act alongside Ahab. It would be enough to give him whiplash the entire time, but it's not like he hasn't set aside personal feelings for the sake of some greater cause before. ]
Yeah. [ His response is delayed, but he nods. ] You can count on me. And I'm counting on you, too.
[ Snake's loyalty belongs to Miller, not Ahab, but maybe that's good enough. ]
