"Let them in, and take them out."

[Either way, he doesn't laugh.]
You could join me, my friend.
[He knows what the answer will be. But that won't stop him from offering.]
I would not mind another hand.
no subject
I don't think that's a good idea.
[For an awfully large variety of reasons, none of which he is going to voice.]
You don't want someone like me along for the ride.
no subject
[But of course Reinhardt presses. As gently as someone his size can -- it's actually surprising, how careful he says it.]
You can try to make yourself better, my friend. Whatever has happened... if you work for good, that is what counts.
[He believes it, too. Surely, this guy has rough methods, he's not the most upstanding of personalities, but... a force for good is a force for good.]
no subject
[There's a growl in his voice now, one that betrays more emotion than he'd like. 76 is suddenly angry and he's not sure at what or who. The situation, maybe. Himself, most likely. Faced with someone who can't seem to let go of the good old days--the days where doing good mattered, maybe--he's reminded of his own failures all over again.
He tells himself that this is about keeping them safe, helping them get on with their lives, but the ease with which they accepted the explanation for Overwatch's downfall eats at him. They can't possibly think it was as basic as the story the media shoved down everyone's throats in the aftermath.
The world isn't as simple as Reinhardt wants it to be. He tried to do good all his life, and look where it got him. None of this is anything he can believe in anymore.]
What do you think really happened to Overwatch?
no subject
[He'd listen, if the grouchy, growling man ever wanted to open up to more than just a few words. Offering, regardless of the outcome. He has to. That's who he is -- that's what he does. Doing good still does matter, to him.]
[It's never not mattered.]
[The world can denounce its heroes all it wants. But one of them, at least, will not give up so easily. Even in the face of everything he'd loved cracking around him.]
I think that, no matter what I say, you will have something more to tell me. [He shakes his head.] So does it matter what I say? It is done.
But heroes... still remain. [He holds up a finger.] I will humor you, and give you a proper answer.
I think ... we were lead by very proud men. Who grew too far apart. Argued when they should have talked. And in the end, we lost a good man, when the other showed who he truly was.
no subject
[He wishes it were that simple--wishes it was all as cut and dried as what the media fed the public in the aftermath. All things considered, it was a convenient story, especially when the animosity between Jack and Gabriel was real in the first place. Some shady higher power capitalized on it, used it to rid the world of Overwatch and then made it look like the organization ate itself.
There's so much more under the surface, if you only know where to look. 76 has been looking, and hearing such a naive declaration angers him all over again, even if he knows that none of this is Reinhardt's fault.]
It was a set up. The UN had their finger over a delete button from the start, and your commanders gave them the excuse to press it.
no subject
[He keeps his helmet on, but there's weariness in the words, all the same. Enough to where he doesn't need to look this man in the face to express it. He'd cared for those men. One of them betraying them all... it struck deep. And to lose the other?]
[Maybe it was just easier to put a concrete, simple cut-and-dry solution to everything.]
Does it surprise you? That an old man wants an easy answer to that mess? [He leans more heavily on his hammer.] I lost everything, my friend. Maybe I want to believe an easy answer.
[He waves a hand.] But you're dying to tell me these things. I'll listen.
no subject
Or maybe he's just jealous. For as much as they all hated Reinhardt's forced retirement, it had given him the chance to get out and get on with his life. What's so bad about being able to go out a hero, spend the rest of your time fondly remembering the good old days?
It'd be nice, if not for the fact that he knows Reinhardt could never stand the thought of putting his hammer down. None of them are suited for retirement, because they don't know what else to do but fight. He's still out there--still fighting for something 76 doesn't believe in anymore.
76 doesn't elaborate further right away--he has a better question to ask, first.]
Did you answer the recall?
[You know, the one that 76 totally knows happened.]
no subject
[But he'd had more work to do. He'd had to move on. To keep fighting the fight when no one else would. Or could. Retirement was for people who didn't bear the Crusader Armor.]
[He tilts his head.]
The recall?
[It hasn't happened yet, in his timeline.]
no subject
Maybe it didn't get to you yet.
[It puts a few things in context, maybe.]
Good.
no subject
[If 76 didn't have his attention before, the man sure as hell has it now. He's drawn himself up a little more, squaring off those massive shoulders. And... trying his best to keep from getting his hopes up.]
[It's not working.]
Tell me. Please.
no subject
Doesn't 76 owe him at least that much? He's still going to sound more than a little sour about it, however.]
It's exactly what you think it is.
no subject
[Sound sour all you want, 76. You've basically just told this old man his biggest dream has just come true. Or will come true.]
[He sounds hopeful -- so very hopeful. If this is accurate, if they really are being recalled then...]
no subject
No.
[He almost snaps it back, his distaste for the situation more than evident in his voice.]
Your gorilla friend thought it was a good idea to violate UN decree. No idea who answered him. One way ticket to prison either way.
no subject
[Like Reinhardt's palpable eagerness is his belief in his fellow Overwatch agents. Those that remain, anyway. Winston is brilliant. He has no doubt in his judgment call.]
Then I will risk it. Prison is a small price, for doing the right thing.
[You bet your ass he will be the first one on Overwatch's doorstep.]
This old dog still has some fight left in him.
no subject
[But 76 is pretty sure he’d think it bad and short-sighted no matter what. How can they even think about re-starting Overwatch when they don’t even know what brought it down in the first place? The government tearing their “family” apart is a nice story for Winston to tell himself, but he’s far too idealistic. He’s going to make all of the same mistakes, and Jack Morrison’s death will amount to nothing.
Of course, 76 can’t say any of that. Not when he’s trying so desperately to stay dead.]
You think this is what your commander would’ve wanted? You running headfirst into jail?
no subject
[It's the rest.]
You say we are not friends. And yet? Here you are. Trying to tell me to ignore a call to arms...
... because of what my friend would have thought.
[There's still nothing accusing in his voice. Mostly because Reinhardt still believes Jack Morrison died with Overwatch. Because he has to. He has to think his friend is gone, that his grief was not in vain.]
[That someone he cared for didn't lie to him.]
no subject
I’m not your friend.
[76 is very sure about that, in many ways.]
I should go.
no subject
[Something isn't right here. Something is... too familiar. Oddly so.]
[He stares at the other for a long minute. Maybe too long.]
But you didn't.
no subject
[Something decent. The right thing. 76 doesn't know why he's continuing to argue when he's already said too much, and he can feel Reinhardt staring at him even through the helmet.]
Anyone else would've.
no subject
... but anyone else wouldn't tell me to mind the words of a dead friend.
[He's only trying to convince this guy they're something like friends. At least, that's what he thinks he's doing. Once the words come out, he realizes they sound like something else.]
[Though he's not sure what. He's not sure why this conversation feels like they're talking about something more than whether or not they're friendly to one another.]
It is all right, you know.
[To have friends, you grouchy old hobo.]
no subject
It ain’t.
[And won’t be, not as long as he keeps insisting on pretending. He manages to make his feet do what he wants them to, turning away.]
I’ll see you.
no subject
[He doesn't respond to the denial. He just watches the other man turn, watches him get ready to go. Feeling oddly heavy.]
[Like this hadn't even remotely gone right.]
So you will... my friend.
