I...well...
...Alright. Let's give it a shot.
[Darin picks up the laptop and...rubs his chin. He'd seen Tony talking to someone named 'Jarvis.' He'd just assumed this thing worked like the MIDs did. There must be someone on the other side working on this mystery too.]
Hey, uh...Jarvis? My name's Darin. Nice to meet you. If you're working through the data, could you do me a favor and see if any of the symbols match some kind of...rhythm? Like a...like a heartbeat? Or maybe the timing is consistent with a certain recurring instance, like the ship taking off or when we arrive--...
[Darin's eyes go wide for a second.]
Wait.
Wait wait wait wait.
[He looks at Tony.]
The Ingress. People come through it, right? People, objects, whatever. Has anyone checked the data to see if the times people or objects come through the Ingress output specific symbols??
no subject
Very nice to meet you, Mr. Darin. My name is JARVIS. I'll begin a cross-reference with all known historical surges in Ingress teleportation activity and keep you appraised of the results.
[ Tony looks silently satisfied with this development, but when JARVIS falls silent to run the requested data, he finally pipes up. ]
People used to come through at the beginning of every month, when I first got here — I've run a little of that data, just for the first month or two. But after a while, things got...
[ He makes a vague, whole-armed gesture. How do you even explain half of the nonsense that's gone on? ]
Less conveniently precise. Matching activity for the last few months will give us more info, but it'll also be a pain in the ass. [ He gives Darin a thorough, considering look. ] Not that I expect that'll deter you at all.
no subject
[He mimics Tony's whole-armed gesture.]
'Precise?' It must have been big if a small, semi-contained fire was enough to really freak people out.
[Darin picks up that second page that Tony had slid his way and looks it over.]
Deter me? No way. This is fun. I never had the opportunity to really learn anything like this back home.
no subject
[ Tony won't admit it, but two strangers waltzing in from inside the Ingress, overthrowing the old Captains, and working the controls on the machine like they actually knew how the damn thing worked had certainly seemed like a big thing at the time. ]
But if you're already having fun, you're in for candyland. This place has years worth of shit I'd never seen before, and I'm from a few centuries post-blacksmithing. You might wanna schedule in time for eating and sleeping.
[ Tony may resent the fuck out of the Ingres specifically, but the tech on the rest of the Moira is like a nerd's dream come true. ]
no subject
How the hell does that even add up?
[Darin plops his hand in his chin.]
Is any of this stuff restricted? Back home, I would never have been allowed to learn things like this unless I showed some sort of...natural affinity for it. It's why I was never allowed to learn magic.
no subject
[ Well. Besides naturally ~stellar~ personalities, anyway. ]
Restrictions on what you can learn? No. What? That sounds — tremendously shitty, actually. Who even came up with that? [ The very concept actually pisses him off a little. ] The only limit you're up against here is the number of hours in a day.
no subject
[Darin scoffs.]
Who came up with it? Royalty did. They have a natural affinity towards magic through their refined bloodline. To keep the riff raff out, they restricted access to the magic guilds to people who only showed elemental affinity.
In other words, even if you wanted to learn how magic even worked you had to have some elemental affinity. And guess who was born without any.
[He thumbs to himself.]
So, I satisfied my curiosity by taking up a more hands on route. I had a natural talent for blacksmithing and I love to create and build things so...it was a good match. Been at the forge since I was four when I lost my family.
no subject
[ That sounds like two of the top kinds of bullshit Tony can't stand: monarchies and magic. Combine the two and it sounds truly insufferable. ]
Well, joke's on them. Their silly gatekeeping just pushed you into a far worthier profession.
no subject
[Darin stretches and cracks his neck.]
...Have you ever just...looked out a window and thought to yourself 'there's so much out there you don't know' and wanted to go out and pursue it? That there's so much more out there beyond the horizon that could expand on what you can already do? What you already know?
I know a lot of people are kind of annoyed at being here on the Moira but...I've been restless as hell. I literally have all of this new knowledge at my fingertips! There's entire worlds out there waiting to be explored and experiences to learn from! It's like a damn dream for me.
no subject
[ Really, really annoyed. ]
You're not wrong. This place might just be a greater nexus of information than anything I've ever imagined, and I don't come from a world with shitty information gatekeeping. And if you think of the Ingress as a gateway to anywhere in the multiverse - y'know, purportedly, if the thing were actually working as intended - then you might just have access to all knowledge that technically exists, anywhere.
So, what're you planning to do about that?
no subject
Do you even need to ask? I'm going to learn everything I can! All this time I've been limited to what I was allowed to learn, but now that I can learn anything I want?
I'm going to learn and I'm going to adapt. I'm going to fill this head of mine with so much knowledge, there'll barely be any room for dreams...!
Then I'm going to use that knowledge to create better weapons and armor. I'm going to use that knowledge to help people. Make things better for people who weren't lucky like me. I'll teach them myself. And I'm going to build, and I'm going to create, and I'm going to show everyone that just because I was born a certain way, it doesn't make me any less amazing!
no subject
Good answer.
[ Thank fuck the Captains are assigning actual useful, proactive people to this department. Maybe he won't have to climb the walls in frustration after all. ]
Tell you what. We figure these damn journals out and find ourselves with free time again, and I'll give you a crash course on any tech you don't immediately recognize.
[ And if he's from the blacksmithing era, there's probably a lot of that. Computers most especially. ]
