For a moment, at least. Would her life have been different if space travel was possible? Would she have spent nearly as much time buried in books about past glories? Would she still have dragged the Reliance crew into the Dragon's Triangle, following a hunch... The smile falters a little.

"That said, I think you'd probably like Survey," he goes on, wandering into babble territory. Smooth, Miles. "The science might be hell, but the payoff is amazing, I hear. It must be some kind of adrenaline rush to set foot on a world no one's ever even seen before, or else none of them would be crazy enough to do it. It's a shame my mother isn't here, she could tell you all about it."

And she can tell what he's doing. Or trying to do anyway. The smile doesn't disappear, but it does take a self-deprecating note.
"Miles," she says, "I know I haven't made the best first impression and perhaps-- I haven't given the best showing of being able to handle myself, but it's all right. You don't need to treat me so carefully. I promise I'm not going to fall entierly apart." Very nearly, perhaps, but all the same, Lara keeps her promises.

She turns to face him fully, "Thank you for coming here with me. And speaking to me in the bar. It's-- I haven't had the easiest time adjusting recently." Her turn to gesture a little vaguely, "Being back around people not intent on killing me." She falters a little, but carries on, "I don't want-- I don't want to scare anyone or make anyone uncomfortable."
Lara stops herself with a sigh and makes a slight face, "And I'm still doing this poorly. But really, please don't apologize, you've done nothing wrong."

He grins a little wider, tilting his head up at her. "Don't worry, I'm very difficult to scare." That's not strictly true, Miles is piss-scared all the time, but he is difficult to scare off. And Lara, he doesn't find threatening -- hell, she seems more scared on reflex than anything else, that lingering afterimage of fear that grips you even once you've run past the trauma. "And you haven't made me uncomfortable at all. I -- " He hesitates a moment, hovering, lips twisting. "I've been there, too."

"Thank you, Miles. Really." Her smile is a more substantial this time, "I'd like to hear about it sometime. I'm afraid I'm not terribly good company tonight."

"Now would be a terrible time to tell it," he concedes, but his smile widens a little with a companionable light in his eyes. He sketches her a half-bow and steps back from the railing with a jerk of his head that's something akin to a salute. "Thank you, Lara."

Lara bites her lip to stifle a laugh, shaking her head at him, "You're welcome, but for what, I can't imagine."
