"They wanna help themselves, is what you mean!"

"If you don't trust them, trust me." Which is stretching it, probably. Steve isn't so sure this is his Bucky. "Everyone has to do it. You came a long way."
no subject
"Just who in the hell are you? Who is he? Who are you?" Whoever's got the answer right now, please speak up! It's like Steve is here, but not. The face is so close, but younger somehow or perhaps baby-faced? Honestly, if he says what he thinks this man could say, Bucky isn't sure whether he'll laugh, cry, or start throwing punches.

"Steve." The words are slow, breathing slower. "Steve Rogers." And this time, he decides to leave out Bucky's name just in case and goes straight for, "What do you remember?"
no subject
So it's back to this blondie thinking he knows how to play this game with Bucky. But he's no push over. A handsome mug isn't going to blindside this soldier!
"I'll ask the questions here." His brown eyes run the length of this supposed Steve. "What's your middle name?"
no subject
"Grant." There's no hesitation, no undecided look. "Is this how we're gonna do it?" All these questions could get pretty tedious.
no subject
This is all just too coincidental. Cap wouldn't be vouching or these intergalactic criminals, so they must have found a look-alike to help him lower his guard. It won't work! He has to stay strong, keep them off his back and stop them from scanning him.
no subject
"I could tell you my birthday." A pause, and he tilts his head. "Or yours. Where we grew up too, but it's not gonna change what's going on. When have I ever lied to you?" And just like that, he shows his wrist where the MID rests.

When the man extends his arm, though, Bucky can't help but step close and pull it down so he can see better (some of them in the room are short, pal, sheesh!). But it's not the MID that gives him pause, it's the way Blondie feels. Both of his scarred and scrawny hands grabs at his thick forearm, squeezing with no small amount of pressure. It's not meant to be threatening, just a test. His muscles are too dense to be merely human. And the heat he's giving off isn't normal either.
"Do you have the shield with you?" He's not buying this one hundred percent yet! No way! But if... If he's got the shield, then...

This, at least, is better than the fight he assumed was coming, and even if it's not exactly the most comfortable thing, standing there while Bucky touches him like he's never seen him before, Steve allows it. There are a lot of questions threatening to fall free, but the other's question about the shield quickly shuts them all down. He considers placing his other hand atop Bucky's - the last time they'd been in the same place together, he'd been shot and nearly on the verge of giving up - to convince himself this is somehow real. Yet, he doesn't. He has to accept it is what it is, even if they're not from the same time or the same anything at all.
"It's in my room." Where he usually keeps it when he's on the ship. There's a frown, unmoving for the moment. "I'll bring it here, but don't give them a hard time while I'm gone."

His eyes turn to the very patient nurse and her orderly, and then he finally admits defeat. "Just... Let's get this over with and then I'll see this shield for myself." The tension is now broken in the room and the nurse carefully pulls him into the center for a proper scan and physical.
For his part, at least, Bucky keeps his chin up, but it's obvious he's about a million miles away just waiting for them to hurry up and do this. Naked, bony, and a little cold he looks like a wet mutt whining on the vet table. It's pathetic and he hates it so much. He hates these bastards that grabbed him, he hates this man telling him to trust him, he hates that he allowed himself to be put into this situation defenseless.
And once they start the scan, he has to remember to just keep breathing and not freak out. All goes well, of course, until they hit his arms and the nurse gives a strange look at her instruments. As she talks quietly with the orderly beside her, Bucky's fingers are anxiously rubbing against one another. Like hell they are going to just let him leave like this. it's coming. She's going to tell him it'll need to be removed and he'll retaliate and then they'll really see just what side Blondie's on—
"... fine, he can keep them."
"What?" What about threatening to pull out the C4 in his arms??
"You can keep the uh... items in your arm. We're not going to remove them."
Okay, but... Really? They're not gonna...? Well hot diggity dog! Maybe these guy's aren't so bad after all.
"Can I... get dressed or?" He looks between them and Steve, drifting closer to his pants that still lay on the table beside him.
"Sure. We're finished. You're free to leave."
Ahh Bucky's mind is blown! What kind of people are they to let him walk out of here with C4? They are either the dumbest scientists the Nazi Party has recruited yet or... They aren't here to threaten him. With a confused scowl he starts redressing as fast as he can so they can both leave.

Steve's been through enough of them that it's nothing unconventional, nothing he wouldn't expect from the medical team in this place, but he's unsure what to make of this version of his friend. There are notable differences that he doesn't need to point out, body language and anatomy both. He lingers a good several steps away to give them space, arms crossed and only observing, and when something's mentioned about his arms... He lets his own drop, curious like he expects to get an answer at some point about the question he doesn't even ask. And once Bucky is dressed, Steve inclines his head toward the exit.
"It's this way." The decks are a bit of walk, but if they go quickly, it won't take any time at all. "I told you - you can trust me."
Meaning it wasn't such a bad experience, right? Everything's fine, and they're going to be fine. They'll make it through this like they do anything else that comes their way regardless of what's different.
no subject
"What in the world is wrong with your bed?"
no subject
"Nothing," is his answer, moving across the room to the one that's his and reaching inside the open curve to retrieve the shield. "Each deck is styled a little different. This one sleeps fine." Mostly. If he could actually sleep comfortably. "Here."
He extends the shield toward him. This is what he wanted, right?
no subject
After a moment he gives it back to its supposed owner.
"Here. Hold it up like I'm about to kick your teeth in," Bucky instructs casually.
no subject
"I'm not gonna fight you in here." There's not enough space, and even if he did, they were bound to break something. He's sure Niko wouldn't be too thrilled about that if he came back to holes in the walls or things broken in half. A pause, and then, "Outside." The hallway has enough room if he's going to kick at him and the shield. So, Steve walks right back out, adjusting his grip on it as he does with the expectation of Bucky to follow.
no subject
"Don't worry," he tells Steve as he assumes the position, shield held up high to protect his head and body. "I won't wreck your handsome mug." He just wants one good kick to listen to the vibrations. He lifts his right knee and lets off a quick snap kick right in the center of the shield. Thankfully he's still in his uniform guards; otherwise, that would really hurt.
The energy between the two opposing forces sings out in a very familiar twang that's not like anything else in existence, so excuse him if he really does look gobsmacked.
"You're really it," he says quietly. "That's vibranium..."
no subject
"I said I wouldn't lie to you," he repeats, wondering what they're supposed to do now. Where they're going to go from here. "Are you okay?"
With this, with being in space. With... everything.
no subject
"You mean, besides being shanghaied to space and being unwillingly scanned? Sure, I guess. This is why I get paid the big bucks."
