move & lull
"Sometimes, the thing that brings us together also pulls us apart. "

The beginning of the month was a whirlwind of confusion—for both seasoned and new members of the crew. Link’d Inc’s unsavory methods for obtaining information were revealed, the company’s front runner was murdered and planted on the ship, and with the help of Benjamin Link, the crew was able to free the kidnapped children and unlock the ship so that the Moira could get as far away as possible. It was a mess, but after the refugees were taken to a nearby by planet to start over, things have finally begun to settle down. The ship also has more crew than it’s ever had, and that can only mean one thing: more work. An unfortunate side effect of having so many bodies in one place, everyone is being asked to contribute; the captains implore everyone to chip in and do their share. Clean up after yourselves, don’t miss your shifts, and give fellow crew members a hand with their tasks if they can’t get them done on time.
☄ SPACEWALK ( 02.16 - 02.23 )
Eventually, Manasseh comes to the crew with a training opportunity. The captains are well aware that not everyone on board have learned essential skills for surviving and working in space. To remedy that, she has offered to take a week to train groups in the skill of performing space walks on the hull. Those who already have experience are welcomed as assistant instructors. Those willing will learn how to safely don a spacesuit and secure oxygen lines and tethers—for both themselves and others. All skills that will come in handy in case there is a need for emergency repairs, or if the crew encounters a low-atmosphere environment they wish to explore. Mysteriously, there is also a promise of something interesting on the horizon for those willing to learn.
☄ TREATS N' SWEETS ( 02.16 - EVENING )
As a way of extending an olive branch to the crew, the captains have cleared out the kitchen and mess hall early in the afternoon. Later that evening, the crew is asked to come down - via their MIDs - as the captains have a surprise for them. The tables are lined with finger foods, sandwiches, pretzels and chips, but the table in the very back is where the captains are lingering. They’ve made desserts for the crew, but they aren’t just any typical sweet concoction. They are each unique, and there are small, hand-written signs in front of each:

JUST RELAX: Mint chocolate chip ice cream scooped out into bowls and is the most sweet of the three. The first bite does little to the person eating it, but each subsequent taste results in an increasingly relaxed state. The more that is consumed, the more mellow the person becomes.
BE HONEST: A delicate concoction of science and the culinary arts, this dessert is refreshing and semi-sweet. The fruity flavors burst in your mouth, loosening your tongue, and result in a brief period of honesty. The reactions vary from person to person—anywhere from being more blunt than normal to answering any question that is asked without a filter. The effects wear off after an hour.
YOU'RE SWEET: A selection of small chocolate cheesecakes offer something rich and decadent to enjoy. Each one brings something a little different in terms of flavor, the taste lingering for some time after you’re done. Some make you feel indulgent, some make you feel romantic; this makes you feel both. Those that sample this dessert will feel lighter, happier, and more likely to indulge in romantic endeavors. The effects last for only one night, dissipating after a good night’s sleep. Those that do not require sleep will suffer the effects for two days.
☄ LANTERNS IN THE BLACK ( 02.23 )
The day starts out differently than most. The captains send a message saying that everyone has been granted light duty for the day, and once they finish their necessary chores, they are given the remainder of it to themselves. Around midday, an announcement will be made. The pilgrim fleet of Librae Prime will be performing their yearly Celebration of Life. They are on their way to a system decades away, and each year, they celebrate the lives gained and lost within their ranks by releasing a multitude of brightly colored lanterns out into space. The Pilgrims make a habit of inviting ships within range to participate as it is a joyful event for them.

The entire crew is welcome to watch from the observation deck, the lights dimmed so the view can be properly appreciated, but those members of the crew who have participated in the space walk lessons or have previous experience have a special opportunity all their own. Manasseh invites them to the airlock with a supply of flying lanterns and an offer to put their new-found skills to use by releasing the Moira’s own lanterns. The morning after the flight of the lanterns a special surprise will await everyone in their mailboxes. A small lantern sits waiting for each member of the crew. It casts a soft light comparable to a simple nightlight and will hover in a stationary position when activated.

Space Walk

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-17 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Maya hates space travel. It's not so much space sickness (which is likely psychosomatic anyway) as the understanding that little more than a sheet of metal separates one from certain death.

But the training is important. Since she has every intention of escaping this miserable ship at the first opportunity it's important to learn...how to do that.

Movement is cumbersome. But then again, she's used to working wearing practically nothing at all. So she feels like a complete, hulking mess. Each step is painfully clumsy to her mind, but she carefully moves her way across the hull.

She's just starting to feel like she's got a good rhythm when she's stopped in her tracks, at the sight of the red ribbons of energy.

What the kriff?]

[They dissipate just as quickly as they appeared. Wanda only wanted to make sure that she could, after all. This suit is so cumbersome it makes her take back every complaint she's ever had about layering for winter. It feels like her boots have boots, and maybe they actually do.

She notices Maya and smiles - clearly she hasn't yet realized anyone saw the small display of power.]

There has to be an easier way to walk in this.
whatawaste: (Thoughtful)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-17 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there is.

[That isn't something someone says after a display like that. Not unless they're trying to hide something.

And, really, everyone has something to hide. Maya's just a little too curious for her own good.

Which is probably why she sends a tendril of thought out, trying to probe the other woman's mind gently. Secrets are usually surface-level right after something like that.]
seeingscarlet: (witch; wonder where your heart came from)

[personal profile] seeingscarlet 2016-02-18 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
[That might not have been the wisest idea...there's a hint of something, then awareness, then resistance. And is that a flicker of red in Wanda's eyes?

Surprise filters through, but no anger. Not yet. Wanda watches silently, waiting to see what Maya will do.]
whatawaste: (Surprised)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-18 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Surprise follows quickly enough across Maya's features. She doesn't get resistance. Unless it's Yuri hiding something from her. But there's no one else like Yuri out there.

No one.]

How did you do that?
seeingscarlet: (curious; 022)

[personal profile] seeingscarlet 2016-02-18 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I did not want you there.

[Unfortunately, neither language Wanda knows can adequately describe how this sort of thing works. And Wanda herself is starting to questions whether it's just an accident of science or actual magic.]

How did you do that?
whatawaste: (Nervous)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-18 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[She didn't want her there? Just like Yuri. Hiding the secrets of his past from her.

It's incredible. A little intimidating, but also incredible.]

I don't know. It's just something I do.
seeingscarlet: (concern; what did you do)

[personal profile] seeingscarlet 2016-02-19 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Wanda taps the helmet on the side with the radio, shakes her head, and mouths 'later.' She's not sure who else can hear this conversation and that's one aspect of her powers she tries to keep quiet, or at least among people she trusts.

But she was just playing with the more public aspect, so she lets one wisp of power briefly flash across her right hand.]

It is good to know that it still works in this. I wouldn't want to guess if someone needed help.

[Yeah, that's totally all they were talking about...]
whatawaste: (Headachy)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-19 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[A strange sense of relief washes over Maya. Not because the woman is so forgiving, but because she's so shrewd. So many of the people Maya's met on the ship so far seemed overwhelmingly trusting.

Good to know she's not the only paranoid person around.]

That makes sense.

[Both the suggestion that someone may be listening and checking for powers.

Which gives Maya a bit of an idea. She's pretty sure they haven't been able to bug her for telepathy yet, anyway. Tentatively, she tests the waters, sending a thought out to the other woman.]

Can you hear this?
seeingscarlet: (curious; 043)

[personal profile] seeingscarlet 2016-02-19 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Wanda can't really blame her; she does the same thing if someone gives her a reason to be suspicious. And it isn't as if her fears have been completely unfounded - violence among the crew is on the rise and there are people she has to protect.

She also doesn't want the captains to try to make her use the darker aspects of her powers, and the only way to ensure that is to keep them from finding out.]

Yes.

[Surprise again. Wanda and River communicate in much more abstract terms: images, feelings, fleeting impressions. It's dizzying, like staring into a thousand reflections of reflections. This is cleaner, simpler.

It's still difficult to keep surface emotions from coloring her 'words' - surprise and curiosity at the new discovery, excitement mingled with a little fear from the spacewalk itself.]

Is this another 'just something you do?'
whatawaste: (Surprised)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-19 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[All of her life, Maya's thought of her peculiarities as a bit of a curse. But in the last few years, she's begun to see how incredibly useful a gift they can be.

But this? This is just...lightyears beyond anything. Being able to communicate through telepathy? And having someone else communicate back? That's a wildly new experience, which leaves her own thoughts colored by emotion. Specifically excitement.]

I guess so? No one's ever answered before. Not like this.
seeingscarlet: (witch; shippy; 067)

[personal profile] seeingscarlet 2016-02-20 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[New skills like this take more concentration than normal, so Wanda's eyes go red each time she 'speaks.']

You're the first person I've met who could do this.

I'm Wanda.
whatawaste: (Happy)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-20 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Maya.

[This may officially be the strangest situation that Maya's ever found herself in. Which is really saying something.]

This is incredible...

[She actually smiles. Which isn't something she does all that often.]

We're in space and talking to each other with our minds. It is not what I was expecting from this class.

[Then again, a lot of things on the Moira have defied both expectation and logic, so maybe she shouldn't be so surprised.]
whatawaste: (Thoughtful)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-21 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I wasn't either. For the record.

[But hey. She'll take it. There are definitely less pleasant surprises in the galaxy.]

What's the red energy ribbon? How do you do that?
seeingscarlet: (concern; 078)

[personal profile] seeingscarlet 2016-02-22 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
It is...hard to describe. No one knows what it is, but it's mine.

[Loki called it magic, and maybe it is, but it feels so different and limited compared to every other type of 'magic' she's seen.]
whatawaste: (Sad)

[personal profile] whatawaste 2016-02-22 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Maya can relate. There isn't really a word for what she can do either. Not that she knows, anyway. But gift or curse, it's a part of her.]

It's beautiful
