transmission theory
"A thousand fibers connect us, and our actions run as causes, comimg back to us as effects."

As of now, it's common knowledge to the crew that Tipota is dead. The manner of her death, however, is still being determined, and the other captains have sent another reminder through the MIDs to continue traveling in groups and not to wander around. The power issue has yet to be resolved, though it seems nothing is apparently wrong with the engines or the wings, but slowly, the chill begins to recede into something a little more tolerable—still cold but not freezing. The malfunctions that manifest aboard the Moira start to resemble a more systematic pattern, lights flickering in certain sections of the ship before shutting down in intervals of 30 to 60 seconds and coming to life again. It moves on through several areas, though it doesn't affect places with larger groups of people.

A day or two after the power begins to stabilize itself, everything comes to a standstill. There's a moment that seems as if time slows and stops. Things are eerily quiet... Anyone in the hallways will hear the lock of one of the I.L.R. release, security measures suspended to preserve life support functions. What had been a peaceful moment roars into chaos.

☄ Ploiatos
It's been here as long as anyone can remember. It lurks in the shadows, a human-shaped figure dressed in the tatters of a Moira uniform. In the dark, it feels the most comfortable, and its movements are impossible to pinpoint without the light. From a distance, it might appear to be someone you know, another crew member who's become lost in the corridors, but up close — well, no one actually knows what it looks like. At close proximity, it sinks itself into you, and the cold that has plagued the ship seems warm in comparison as the dark rises. Perhaps there had been something to the warning the captains had given before; maybe you should R U N.
Together: There is always safety in numbers. Ploiatos is severely confused by the presence of more than one body, and though it's attracted to the particular emissions of the crew, it prefers the choice of one to two or more. Trying to hunt or capture it is impossible; it's gone as quickly as you can blink.
Alone: There is no hope. You don't realize that it's there until you're waking up, the marks of its touch spreading across part of your body. These are permanent, a beacon to Ploiatos that it's had you once and only needs to get you once more to end it. Once will not kill you, but a second time will. Any attempt at contact via MID isn't likely as they momentarily short out within proximity to the creature.
☄ Bait & Lure
For those brave enough to try, a plan has been implemented by several of the crew to attempt luring Ploiatos back into its room in the I.L.R. Life support systems are drastically depleted now, oxygen levels low and the lights barely working, but it's up to the crew and those who SIGNED UP to help protect their friends and fellow crew members.

Library

[ The situation being dangerous as it was, Harry thinks it might be prudent to check on on Elizabeth when the lights began to flicker. His handgun is tucked underneath his coat where it might draw less attention as he slipps silently down the hall, moving faster as the lights go out entirely. It's entirely possible that he will be attacked but there are some things he is willing to risk if it means protecting someone he's found himself becoming quite fond of.

The lights come back on as he pushes the door to the library open and spots Elizabeth on the floor. ]

Miss DeWitt! [ He hurries over, gun set on the floor beside him as he kneels to check her vital signs. ] Elizabeth, can you hear me?

[Elizabeth is face down on the floor, looking pale and weak, but she's coming to again. She can hear Harry's voice, she thinks.]

Mr. Hart...?

[Her voice is a grating rasp and the three syllables are labored, but Elizabeth is quickly putting together what's happened. Something had grabbed her, and her back feels tingly.]

Be careful... it... might still...

[The lights start flickering again, and Elizabeth looks around as best she can, scared.] Get out of here...!

I won't be leaving without you. It's far too dangerous.

[ He offers her a hand, still carefully watching her for telltale signs of broken bone or trauma. It's entirely possible she's in shock, hasn't felt the true direness of her wounds yet. ]

Can you stand? I can carry you if need be.

[Broken bones no, trauma and terror yes. She's looking around the dark areas of the library, certain she's hearing something still in the shelves, something watching them.]

[She grabs his hand and forces herself up as quickly as she can with the experience of someone used to moving to stay alive even when injured. Something feels like it's arcing along her back, pulling at her skin.]

If you insist, but we have to go-- now! [She half-stumbles, half-pushes at Harry to leave the library.]

[ It seems that Miss DeWitt has a side he never expected, he notes as she forces him out of the library. He'd seen that sort of forced movement from soldiers and fellow Kingsman agents.

Gun in hand, he looks out the door carefully to make sure the coast is clear before he steps out first and gestures for Elizabeth to step out. ]

It looks clear, we ought to be fine if we keep moving and reach the Medical Bay.

[ He touches her shoulder lightly. ]

I'll go first. Should anything happen to me, run as fast as you can to someplace with a door you can secure. Do not come back for me, is that clear?

[Elizabeth had a burst of energy, it's true, but now as she locks the library door behind them with her thumbprint it takes her a considerable amount of effort to turn around so she's not faceplanting into the wall for support. And now she's fixating on the thing that's out of place-- the fact that her tailor has a handgun suddenly.]

[She stares at his hand, wondering where it came from, and finally her brain picks up on what's been said. Elizabeth holds out her hand for the gun.]
No, I know how to fire that, I should go first. I can't run far anyway, no point in both of us going down if it finds us again.

[It seems sound, if she could straighten up and stand unaided. It feels like she's had every scrap of energy pulled out of her in one ferocious yank-- right out of her back.]

Normally I would be more than willing to allow you to take initiative, Miss DeWitt. However, I must insist on taking point in this situation.

[ He gives her a stern look. In all honesty he was already considering if he might have to carry her to the med bay if she weakened any further. ]

I do not doubt your ability to defend yourself with a gun but, I cannot in good conscience let you put yourself in further danger when you're in a weakened state.

[...why does she feel like she's being parented by a tailor with a gun right now? Probably because she is. Elizabeth knows almost immediately from his tone that Harry isn't going to budge on this, but it also puts a certain confidence in her. Part of her is saying he's a tailor and he's probably only fired a gun at some kind of shooting range for recreation.]

[A bigger part is saying he knows what he's doing, and that he's a tailor on weekends so to speak.]

[Elizabeth folds and nods without much hesitation.]
Alright, if you insist, you insist. I'll just-- [She starts walking along the wall, keeping her shoulder to it for support.] I'll just be here. Getting ready to run like hell if I have to...

[ Her acquiescence on his request releases a knot of tension in his chest. It would have been unpleasant for both of them if he'd had to carry her all the way to the Med Bay. ]

I do appreciate this, Miss DeWitt.

[ Harry takes the time to make sure a bullet is chambered before stepping ahead to take point, gun pointed down and away where no one except a threat might be injured. ]

It would have been most uncouth to have to carry you over my shoulder, after all.

No offense, Mr. Hart, but I have pretty poor experiences being carried around like a sack of flour. I'd like to avoid it too, if I can.

[She's pretty slow moving, and when she opens her eyes the scenery has a tendency to wobble, but this feels... familiar. In a good way. She only wishes she could be more helpful, instead of dragging herself along the wall.]

This probably isn't the time for this conversation, but you're handy with that, right? [She means the gun, obviously.] I'm guessing you wouldn't be threatening to hoist me up if it meant you might shoot yourself in the leg.

I would not have a gun if I didn't know how to safely use it, I can assure you of that.

[ He keeps a careful eye on her in case she stumbles or falls while so stubbornly moving under her own power. She might not appreciate being carried but if it meant getting her to safety quickly if he strength failed he was willing to risk her ire. ]

In my younger days I served some time in the military. I kept up the habit of maintaining and practicing with a handgun even after I left. Marksmanship does wonders keeping your hand-eye coordination sharp.

Yeah, I imagine that using a gun helps with sewing ability...

[No, it makes no sense, but Elizabeth is practically seeing double so she can't really think too hard about what it even means that a tailor was in the military and still shoots guns for fun.]

I couldn't even begin to explain how I know how to fire a gun, I can't even remember where my room is anymore I'm so tired. What did it do to me?

Not everything must be related to one's occupation, my dear.

[ Heaven help him. Attacked by some fucking monster and she still has the energy to sass him. Young people truly were terrifying in their own way. ]

I'm not sure. I assume it somehow took your energy from you and left you in a weakened state. What I'm curious about is why it left you alive while killing that other young woman.

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-01-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
[By this point Harry, Elizabeth is just solid sass and skin. No muscle, no energy. Just sass. And skin.]

I'm just-- saying that... [She sighs and stops, leaning against the wall. Dizzy.] ... I don't know what the hell I'm saying, nevermind.

[She wants to stay focused and keep walking, and if she'd been alone that might have been easier. But Harry's with her. She has a companion again, a partner almost, that she could trust when she couldn't manage on her own.]

Maybe you showed up before it went for round two. Not that I could tell you how much time has passed between then and now.
