Frisk's reassurance doesn't get a response - Asriel believes them, or at the very least he desperately wants to believe them. Tall shadows out of the corners of his eyes, things like heavy footsteps, even though that man wasn't on the ship, Asriel couldn't chase away that fear. He still remembered the threat he was given early on when he was put to work.
"Do you want to know what happens to animals that don't work?"
Asriel didn't know the answer, but he shared a cell next to them. He heard their cries, cowered at their roars and growls, and saw the marks they left on their cell doors in desperate attempts to escape.
His family wouldn't let him go back. He'd never see that place again. But it still doesn't stop his loud sobs, as suppressed terror bubbles and rises to the surface. What could have happened was far more terrifying then what actually did. A part of him feels awful, unleashing all of this onto Frisk. Frisk shouldn't always have be the one who saves him. But at the same time, he doesn't let go.

And he doesn't want Frisk to let go either.
