[ What a universal irony it was that a joking comment struck so close to home; despite the fact that the reality was infinitely worse.

He didn't hear her get down off the table but her voice carried through and brushed back the whispers of laughter and screaming, that was threatening to overwhelm him. Stopping, he took a deep and slow breath but if she was paying attention, she might notice that the alien cat thing had ghosted up beside his companion.

Courser now rested his weight against Adrien's leg, the top of the bahari's back reaching to just above the knee. It was Courser's presence, rather than the breath that helped Adrien shove the whispers of memory back into their tightly sealed boxes.

Dropping his left hand, to ruffle the tracker's bright blue mane, he took another breath and then looked over his shoulder and back towards Daisy. ]

I know.

[ Came his simple response.

At one time, he would have flown off the handle in a fit of childish tantrum. If there was any positive to be found in his prior experiences, it was at least a slight balancing of his temper. He was self-aware enough to recognize that there was no way Daisy could understand how her joke slammed into an open, gaping wound. How could any sane person even fathom the reality?

He gave Courser's mane an affectionate tug and then dropped his hand away. ]
