"It looks more like they'd torn things down to make... barricades?"

There were no footpaths between the scrap piles that would be used by people who were salvaging. They just haphazardly blocked off hallways and with how unstable a lot of them looked, one gets the impression that it was very rushed.

"I keep hearing noises when I wander down there," he murmurs, bringing up his omni-tool. "I thought I was hallucinating at first but then I tried recording it..."
