Who: Papyrus, Chara, Frisk
When: March 21st
Where: The galley
What: Papyrus runs into an old... friend.
Warnings: Chara.
[Papyrus was ordered to spend a few days in the medbay, at least until his bones knitted themselves back together and his health had a chance to replenish. He'd agreed, mostly because being stuck in bed was a great excuse to stay away from that door he used to spend so much time in front of. It still hurt to think about. Palatino -- the other sort of monster, the man behind the door -- had turned out to be no friend of his. There was no love there.
It stung, but having friends visit and leave messages made him feel so much better. Even if things hadn't worked out, people cared about him, and he still had a lot of optimism for whatever came next.
In an attempt to stay busy and keep some semblance of normalcy, he decided to do something comforting and familiar. Making spaghetti sounded like a great way to spend an afternoon, even if he had no idea how he was going to punch all those fresh ingredients with one arm in a sling.
He was in the middle of awkwardly balancing a number of tomatoes and pasta boxes on his good arm when he turned around and spotted a familiar form in the doorway.
Uh-oh.
Chara hadn't responded to any of his messages or greetings in person, not really, but he still gave them a bright smile. There was always a chance that they didn't hate anyone anymore, right?]

Hello, human! How nice it is to see you!

[It's hardly the warmest of replies, and does little to translate the opaque expression they've assumed. Their eyes go to the ingredients, then the sling, and then sweep him completely--there's no surprise, here, but for a passing moment he might spot interest. Hurt, but not deathly so. These are the results they glimpsed in ignored network announcements. Now they can observe without asking.]
[Not that they want to learn more. They open their mouth to say something, maybe a greeting more complete than that noncomittal 'hn', but then they think better of it. In fact, they reevaluate the wisdom of acknowledging him at all and dismiss him entirely. It's not very subtle for them to skirt the long way around the kitchen island, but all roads lead to the pantry, and they promised Sans they wouldn't feed Papyrus his own teeth. (Shunning doesn't count as violence, right?)]

It's funny, I haven't bumped into you at all lately! You'd think we'd at least see each other in the-- whoops!
[One of his tomatoes rolls off the counter despite his best effort to snag it and rolls away, ending up about halfway between the two. Papyrus eyes it, then Chara, then the tomato again, then back to Chara.]

[Probably not. Some guilt churns in their gut and they rush to drown it, because it wouldn't be fun, the tomato would've splatted on the floor if it were ripe. He can pick it up himself. They turn on their heel and open the pantry door, take out a box, then walk to the cupboard with bowls. He brought it on himself. If Chara wasn't there, he would've had to chase it down anyway.]
[Once again Papyrus gets no answer. There's something oddly defensive about the hunch of Chara's shoulders.]

But there's something different about the way they carry themselves. They seem less aggressive, less prone to outbursts of anger, and he takes that as encouragement. Sans would be pretty pissed if he knew what he was about to do, probably, but he's going to do it anyway.
After all, Chara must have learned their lesson by now, right?
He retrieves the tomato himself and grins at them.]
Human-- Chara, I mean, would you like to assist me? I could teach you Undyne's special recipe!
no subject
[Which, of course, they kind of are. He wouldn't be wrong. Still, if he did that, then it'd not only hurt, but they might not get a chance to finish their lunch, and they want this cereal more than they want to savor Papyrus' pain. Maybe they'll get to it later.]
chara ur a tru friend
His grin, which was starting to falter, shines as bright as ever.]
Come! I'll show you a special, secret way to make the sauce!
HOW HAD I STILL NOT REPLIED? pretend this was there from the start.
['No-Thank-you-why-would-I-ever-want-to-learn-to-cook-things-with-you, they want to say, but they bite their tongue, refusing to turn around. He's so stupid, and it really would be easy to tear into him, but they really, really shouldn't this time. Chara opens the box and pours some sort of kitchen-made groat cereal out, barely closing the box when they're done.]
IT'S OKAY BUDDY you've had stuff going on <3
Which made the chaos he was about to rain down on these vegetables that much more ironic and sad.]
Very well, Chara! Perhaps next time! I'm always willing to teach you the tricks of the trade, if you're interested!
[He sets up a pair of tomatoes in a line, the way Undyne taught him. Then he nearly takes his arm out of the sling, but the twinge of pain is a very effective reminder. He raises his left arm, curling his bony fingers into a fist.]
Prepare yourselves, healthy ingredients!!
[And down comes the fist with a hearty nyeh! Tomato chunks splatter everywhere -- the wall, the counter, the floor, and onto Papyrus himself. He seems pleased with the result.]
no subject
[Congratulations, Papyrus. You have their attention.]

He's seen them sneer, and scowl, and snarl, and show every version of cold indifference that exists for fleshy creatures, but this is the first time they've shown any sort of genuine interest in what he was doing. Papyrus can't help grinning -- of course! The key to getting Chara to open up more is definitely punching! It makes perfect sense, and he's not sure why he never thought of it before now.
The more time the kid spends pulping vegetables, the less time they'll have to hurt people.
He sets up another tomato and and onion, and nods at them.]
Are you sure you don't want to try? These vegetables aren't going to sauce themselves!
no subject
No, I don't have time for that.
[For someone who's obviously busy, they sure spend time watching Papyrus again if he turns back to his task. After the onion and tomato have been soundly vanquished and even more vegetables are brought forward, Chara suddenly says,]
Are you seriously going to smash all of those?
[They nod at the counter, where Papyrus' little pile awaits.]
