The Exo falls silent for a while in the wake of that question, contemplative. "I don't know," he says. "The bits I'm able to tell you are about the most I can remember. Other things...well. Guess I used to write 'em down before too."
He stops, looking off at the sky. "...there's a bit in my old journal I found, I guess I was writing to some kid named Ace. ...my kid. Sounded like it was either be a robot or be dead. Said I'd try to find 'em, even if they might not recognize me anymore."
Shaking his head, Cayde starts to walk again. "Guardian, that's what happened after the Darkness came, after Earth's population nearly got swallowed up, after I died. The Traveler saved what was left of humanity, sent us the Ghosts. They find their Guardians, bring 'em back to life. We're chosen to keep fighting the good fight, and so long as the Ghosts are connected to the Traveler's Light, we'll keep coming back no matter how many times we get taken down."
