A friend of mine used to say that it was an insult to bits to call a Guard bit-brained, because bits can say either yes or no, and the Guards only ever told him no.

Bits are a kind of small companion, similar to a pet.

[Her friend also used to claim that what the Master Control Program most needed to absorb was a program with a good sense of humor, which was funny because at the time, every other function and skill was being rounded up and put to what the MCP called efficient use. Sark's troops were not fond of jokes.

One of many friends arrested by the Guard and presumed derezzed; he had never had the least self-preservation to go with his humor. Sans did ask.]
