Hunk hadn't been to the mansion before. The only things he really knew about it were that it was big and full of Kurt's friends, or at least people Kurt knew from home. So when he was extended an invitation to show up, how could he turn it down? He was super curious about the people Kurt lived with, plus he loved making new friends.

And naturally he had to scope out the kitchen.

He'd already been let in and was standing in the entrance way rubbing his arm a little awkwardly. Should he just ... start opening doors and introducing himself? No, that'd probably be weird. Definitely be weird. Just because his buddies were okay with that didn't mean random people would be.

Instead he glanced around, waiting to see if anyone showed up. If nobody did he'd just have to find his way to the kitchen. I mean, everyone needed to eat.

Charles' disappearance has left Erik a little aimless (not that he'd ever admit that to anyone else; he can barely admit it to himself). At least by now he's got some form of employment, picking up odd jobs with Badou, so he's not spending countless hours shut in his room. By now he's heard all about this note that Charles left, leaving the house and its residents in the care of him and Logan, and he's not sure how to feel about that, either. Charles has always believed things about him that he doesn't believe about himself. Why would Charles have wanted him to do this?

At least now, when he's not working, he doesn't spend so much time hiding in his room. He's not as social as some other of the residents, but at least he lingers longer in the kitchen or the day room, and when he finds himself in need of something to do, he does whatever minor repairs or updates the house might need. Anything to keep himself busy. To keep the anger at yet another loss at bay.

When he's not working at odd jobs, he's usually home, and while he has started spending a little more time outside of his room than he used to do, it's still where he spends the majority of his time (especially now that Charles has disappeared). So he's in his room when he hears a crash and the unmistakable sound of glass breaking, only magnified tenfold because it's obviously a large object doing the crashing.

He comes out into the hallway and then along to the stairs, where he peeks over the banister into the entryway. He looks first at the smashed chandelier littering the floor, then up towards the ceiling at the culprit.

Who's floating. Isn't that interesting.

"You look like you could use a little assistance."

Lavellan, already asleep in the living room (for Reasons), wakes with a start at the crackle of fire and the smell of smoke. His disorientation clears after an instant, a survival mechanism he learned long ago to address the first sign of danger. He sits up like a shot, taking in the scene--a fire, quickly spreading, with J frantically and ineffectively trying to put it out.

Okay.

In the next second he sends a sheet of ice from his remaining hand at what he perceives to be the source of the flames, some of it spraying onto J in the process. Sorry, girl. It doesn't smother all of it, but a decent chunk. Enough that it no longer seems to be an emergency.

With that, his nerves settle, and he shakily sits back down on the couch.

"What happened here?"

Crossing paths in the kitchen wasn't unheard of. Erik had kept most interactions brief from what she could see. After the fight with Peter and Charles leaving, it seemed like the roles were reversed. Jean was avoiding most people with the kind of mood she was in.

And when she was in the same room with them, she wasn't all that talkative. Like this morning, glancing at Erik but going about getting herself a glass of orange juice in silence. She doesn't bother reaching out to feel anything from him. She has mental and emotional walls around her, trying to keep her own raw emotions inside.

They'd both had similar thoughts, as far as food anyway. But for now, Badou comes rushing into the mansion, colliding headlong into Hunk and reeling back onto his ass.

"What's the big idea?! Standing in here picking your wedgies...Don't they teach manners anymore?"

He has so many questions that he would like answers to, but luckily for J, he decides that those can wait for a moment. He reaches out with one hand and, rather than use it to try and pull her off the ceiling, he feels for any metal he can find and uses that to float her back down to the floor again.

"How did you get stuck up there?"

He, at least, can't read anyone's emotions unless they're making them obvious, so he has no reason to suspect that anything is any different with Jean than it has been in the past. He also has no method of shielding himself without the helmet, but at least he doesn't assume that anyone with any kind of telepathic ability is trying to read his mind all the time.

It's a bit of a relief that Jean isn't trying to force a conversation with him. So many of the other residents seem to feel that it's necessary to try and talk to him, and he doesn't mind the silence at all. He doesn't feel much like talking either, despite having been here a couple of months now.

Jean doesn't waste much time in mentally moving items in the kitchen over to her while she puts the juice back up. It allows her to stay in her own space. The toaster, the bread, butter. She sets it all up on the counter next to her and then pulls a knife and the jelly to her once she realizes they are missing.

garden; ota

[ While Jean had been skeptical about her ability to be a gardener on the ship when she first arrived, she finds it hard to let go now that they are on an actual planet. She still doesn't think she's all that good at it but it helps distract her while doing something productive. With everything that was going on, it was tempting to leave the mansion. One of the things keeping her there was the garden she had started tending after they all moved in.

Stabbing at the soil was certainly a good way to get out some frustration. And seeing her saplings making some progress was encouraging. At least she managed to get those right.

Sighing, she looks back over to the spot she wanted to plant a bonzai cat tree. Sitting on her legs on the ground, gloves covered in dirt, she wonders if she'll ever find one to plant. ]

library; ota

[ Classes may no longer be a thing at the mansion any longer (Charles had been the only person to establish classes of any sort), Jean was determined to continue teaching herself. Or at least keep up her reading. Many of these books were old ones from the shops in the city. Some she could read, others she couldn't. But organizing them was an ongoing project. Boxes and boxes of them.

The zip and fly through the air and onto shelves and others remain floating as she tries to decide where what goes. She's so engrossed in what she's doing, she barely manages to move a flying book in time before it hits the other person in the head. ]

I'm so sorry! Are you okay?

danger room; closed to residents

[ On those days when she felt a gnawing sort of frustration, like a fire smoldering but refusing to go out, Jean would go to the Danger Room to try and work it out. Smashing fake sentinels did wonders for the anger she was feeling lately. Sometimes only with her mind, redirecting their beams to cut through each other. Other times, a punch in their direction was enough to send them flying from the force projected from it.

It was oddly satisfying, allowing herself to let go. Especially when the flames within her would engulf her body, her hair, her mind, and she could crush fake enemies down into little balls of nothing with one hand.

In fact, she was enjoying that a little too much. Each time, it became harder and harder to pull herself back, losing all track of time. But how intoxicating to not feel pain or loneliness anymore. Just... power. That feeling of infinity stretched out beyond her and it was all hers to take.

This time, it sends her down to her knees, panting and sweating. She needs to stop doing it. ]

bedroom; closed to residents

[ Another way Jean has been trying to cope with everything going on has been to close herself up in her room, headphones on and just... allowing herself to float. Should anyone come in, that's how they'll find her: floating on her back in the middle of her room, limbs seemingly weightless, one hand holding her walkman on her stomach as the tape plays, eyes closed. It's one of the few things that seems to help her relax nowadays. ]

[Laura hasn't been here long enough to really know her way around, although she does alright most of the time. Logan bringing her here with him isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's a culture shock for Laura to be around so many other people relatively close to her age in a capacity that isn't captivity. She's used to seeing her friends tested on and put through horrible tragedies. She and the others were bound together out of necessity.

Here, that bond doesn't exist in the same way. People here are normal in the sense that they more or less understand how to function socially. Instead of meeting the others and attempting to get to know the others, Laura spends her first handful of days at the mansion exploring. When she peeks into Jean's room, she almost slips right back out.

But it's the sight of that bright red hair and the walkman on her stomach that draws her in. Seeing others with powers isn't new to her, so she treats that as normal as anything. Instead, she stares at the older girl's hair, reaching up to touch at her own while she does. In the back of her mind, she wonders if she'll ever have something about her that's so beautiful and nice. She isn't sure she's worthy of it.

The walkman makes her think of Nate Munson and his iPod, and that connection provides her with enough reason to stand and watch Jean with a sort of curious anxiety that she sometimes feels when encountering something that she wants to learn more about. She just isn't good at attempting to strike up conversation, so she...doesn't. She just stands there, growing increasingly anxious and letting her thoughts fill her mind.

[ Jean feels so calm and pulled into the music invading her ears that she doesn't notice Laura for quite a long moment. Until she starts to feel a growing anxiety that isn't hers slip against her walls. The faint voice of thoughts follow, muffled by the music but still unmistakable.

Her brow creases before she opens her eyes and looks over at the door. Which sends her falling down to the floor in shock (and on her ass). What the fuck.

She pulls her headphones off, not even bothering to hit stop, face hot from embarrassment. ]

[Laura's eyes widen, but she doesn't say anything at first. She shakes her head a little, finding that words are a little more difficult than usual right now. She's never very talkative, but even managing a squeak seems like a challenge. ]

Watching.

[Her accent is thick as she speaks, voice quiet and skittish.

She feels closed in within the mansion walls, no matter how large it is here. This is her first attempt at meeting someone here, and she really doesn't want to make Logan angry or frustrated by failing at it completely.
]

Exploring.

[There. That sounds a little less like she was just standing there observing her, which is exactly what she was doing. ]

That...that is bad?

[personal profile] greyate 2017-04-18 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ And almost immediately, Jean can feel her embarrassment wash away into something else. She finally stops the walkman and sets it aside before getting up with a grunt. Her ass is going to be sore tomorrow if not later tonight.

But the girl... she can't stay mad or embarrassed. Not when she's clearly new here. She's so quiet, too.

Jean shakes her head at her question. ]

Not bad. Just--you should knock before entering someone's room, you know? It's polite.

[ A beat, ]

How much have you explored?
coercive: (pic#11114348)

[personal profile] coercive 2017-04-18 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
The version that Laura knows of him is entirely based on the comics that exist in the time she comes from. Not that she really knows all that much, and it's her curiosity about him that has her quietly observing him during her first few days in the mansion. If Logan insists that they stay here and that she get to know the other kids that around (though she's not sure she's willing to call teenagers kids) she might as well make sure that she gets a good look at everyone.

So she lurks as best as she can, making sure to be as quiet as possible. It's likely that he can sense her there just the way she can start to sense him based on his scent, which she uses to track him throughout the mansion. It's slightly awkward, but she's not able to just walk up and talk to him like a normal eleven year old might. Instead she observes, and waits to approach him until after she feels like it's entirely safe.

She finds him outside working on the house, and tries to keep her skittish nature at bay as she approaches him. "I will help," she quietly offers, waiting to see and hear his reaction so she can try to figure him out.

Polite.

[She repeats the word like it's new to her, and the way it sounds passing from her mouth makes it obvious that it's definitely a term she really hasn't heard or used before. But she nods anyway, agreeing that she'll at least try to remember to knock from now on. If that's what people here like, then it probably isn't that hard to remember to do.

At least the question she's been asked makes her feel a little more at ease. Her hand clutches hold of the doorframe, but she doesn't have tension radiating off of her any longer.
]

I have explored only a little. It is...very big here. So many things to see.

[She's curious as to whether or not Jean knows a lot about this mansion, and the rooms inside.]

[ Jean can't help but smile at that. Nodding, ]

That's how I felt when I first got here, too. You can't go in all the rooms, though. Some of them are other people's bedrooms. Can't just go in there. But there's still lots of other things to see, too.

Do you want me to show you?
coercive: (Default)

[personal profile] coercive 2017-04-18 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Laura hesitates, even as she nods. The idea of being shown around is appealing, but she wants to know who this other girl is first. So she puts a hand against her chest and taps it.]

Laura.

[Now she gestures over toward Jean.]

Who are you?
greyate: (pic#11003048)

[personal profile] greyate 2017-04-18 05:57 am (UTC)(link)

Jean. Jean Grey. It's nice to meet you, Laura.

[Laura doesn't smile often. Especially around people she doesn't know well. But she does let her expression soften a little, and she steps away from the doorframe so Jean can step out and lead her around the mansion.]

Yes. But it will be better now.

[She promises, turning so she can head off down the hall. It's easy to assume that Jean will follow along after her.]
greyate: (pic#11003039)

[personal profile] greyate 2017-04-18 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
[ Jean nods in agreement as she follows, closing the door to her room behind her with a wave of her hand. She catches up to Laura in a few strides and points out the other rooms belonging to the other residents of the mansion.

The library, however, she takes a step into and encourages Laura to follow. Stacks of books and boxes everywhere. ]

This is our library. Still a bit of a mess. I've been trying to organize it but it's proving hard when some of the books are in languages I don't know.

[ Still pretty fascinating tho. ]
coercive: (Default)

[personal profile] coercive 2017-04-18 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Laura quietly follows along after Jean, listening intently to everything she has to say. When they enter the library, her eyes widen as she looks around. She's never seen so many books all gathered in one place.

Very carefully, she creeps further inside, and runs a very gentle touch along the tops of some of the stacks of books. It's easy for her to worry about damaging them without meaning to.
]

I only know how to read a little.

[Mostly the comics that Gabriela read to her over and over again, but she realizes that she "reads" them from memory. A formal education wasn't afforded to the kids at Transigen, but maybe here someone will teach her.]

But it is very good to have so many books.

[Even if she isn't sure what one house will do with all of them.]

I can help you organize.
greyate: pls dnt (Default)

[personal profile] greyate 2017-04-18 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
[ Jean smiles again at the offer, ]

I'd appreciate the help.

If you want, I can help you learn to read more?

[ Logan had said she was a teacher in his time. Maybe she would be better at it than she originally thought. ]
