Chioni has dangerous temperatures during peak hours, which is why they're out at night, after the surface has cooled down. In this case, 'cooled down' is more like ninety degrees, but it's a dry heat instead of the moisture filled heat that sticks to a person. Their trip should be short -- she only needs to grab a few rock and soil samples and then it's back to base -- so her supplies aren't many, but it is nice to have him offer to carry it all for her.
