Soldier: 76 ([personal profile] mylawn) wrote in [community profile] thisavrou_log2017-02-08 01:30 am

a buddy of mine said that he saw jack morrison take his shirt off in the shower

Who: Angela Ziegler, Soldier: 76, special guest Solid Snake, extra special guests Reinhardt and Reaper and Mei
When: Early February
Where: The Ingress entrance to Eosoros and then some other places maybe
What: Basically the part of Undercover Boss where the boss stops being undercover, except with fewer monetary gifts
Warnings: Blood, medical business, an angry old man

[76 arrives on Thisavrou very, very angry.

He’s usually angry, but generally speaking, he manages to keep said anger to a low simmer if only to function on a day-to-day basis. Arriving on this new planet after the ordeal at the Midway Hub, finding that all he can really do is sit and wait for his number to be called means that anger gets the better of him, even as he attempts to settle in (but 'settling in' is for other people). 76 takes one of the security gigs on Eosoros in a bid to do something productive, and that's sort of when things come to a head.

He’s angry, and he screws up.

It’s not really his fault, he thinks. It’s easy to blame the client (too reckless, an idiot, doesn’t listen to him, gets them both in a bad situation), but probably 76 could have handled this better. He should have bailed when things started to go south or ditched the client entirely or not taken the job in the first place—the money for a security detail wasn’t worth any of that, but he’s still boiling over with ire about the whole situation and that’s enough to make him do very stupid things, like throwing himself down in order to save both their asses when the client proves too incompetent to make it through the stupid torture gauntlet.

Hindsight, however, is twenty-twenty, and he’s not exactly coherent as he drags them both back through the Ingress and is immediately sidelined for medical attention. 76, too angry to care about decorum or not making a scene, immediately makes a scene. Someone is trying to hold him down, if only to keep him from getting blood everywhere before a medic arrives. The Savrii, however, are hard-pressed to subdue an enhanced human like him, especially when he’s in absolutely no mood to listen to reason.

Under duress, 76 becomes all but feral, hissing and spitting and doing everything in his power to get out and away, even if that means ignoring the fact that he's wounded and throwing all his self preservation out the window (said like he had any to begin with). It’s only the nature of his injury that keeps him from making an effective escape, though that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to try.

"I guess so." But her voice is soft, because she's thought about this a lot. Even though the Ecopoints were supposed to be self-sufficient for the most part, they did need supplies from time to time. What had happened with Athena that didn't have the computer alerting the others to those who were stranded out at the Ecopoints? Did they just straight up unplug her one day? It's weird. If she was more of a conspiracy theorist, she could come up with some doozies for this one.

Now it's just her, traveling across the globe to collect all this lost data from the abandoned Ecopoints. It's weird how none of the others pooled their data and turned it into the UN or anything. After all, even if Overwatch went under, what value was there in ignoring important information regarding the Earth's climate? Well, that's another question for the conspiracy theorists.

"Okay, I think that's enough of this type of rock. Now I just need a slightly darker type. It's further along the ridge here. They say it's leftover from ancient volcanoes."

[ There's nothing wrong with this. Inappropriate in a working context, perhaps, but laying beside her patients is nothing new for her. He'd know it just as well. She offers herself as warmth and grounding to those in need of it, the easy comfort of another living being beside you when you're hurt. When soldiers were wounded and thousands of miles from home, scared, left to recuperate on their own with nothing but their thoughts to whirl about their heads. She's never enjoyed leaving people like that.

Jack allows her close and then closer, once more, and she doesn't press her luck or drape on him unnecessarily. This is plenty, right here, and all he had to do was flex his arm to draw her closer if he wanted to. As it is, she's close enough to radiate warmth even if she doesn't press against his side, knee touching the side of his as she closes her eyes. She won't drift off, not for a while yet, but it's less stress on him. To not have her observing him so closely or having to face her. ]

You had your reasons, Jack. I understand. And you were badly hurt. [ Betrayed. And then abandoned, when she wasn't allowed to dig further. Cut off from sticking her nose too far into it, as one of the few agents local. ] Those sorts of injuries take time to come back from, and by then...

[ It would have been too late, just as he'd said. ]

I'm sorry you felt as though you couldn't reach out to anyone. I know you had your reasons for that as well, but... you should never have been alone.

[ No one should have to fight alone. ]

It is a bit surprising that he's staying with this subject, and that he's offering his opinion without her having to prompt him for it. He's not a very verbose guy, but this seems like it's important to him that she knows this. Her steps slow a little so they can walk besides each other along the way.

"Thank you. It's been hard..." It's not something she wants to unload on him, even if it seems like he's all right discussing it. And yet these questions she has just won't go away. "I thought at least someone would have remembered us. But not even Athena did." And then she realizes that he probably doesn't know who Athena is. "She was the computer system we had. I don't know why she didn't alert anyone that she couldn't reach us. If Overwatch was shut down, there should have been a computer message, and one sent to us in Antarctica would have bounced back because our comm tower was damaged in a polar storm."

No? Chasing retirement looks good on you.

[Sarcasm? Taunting? A mixture of both? Either way, Reaper is clearly not interested in hearing Jack's protests. With Angela focused on building her life and clientele here, he could in turn focus on keeping Soldier: 76 on his toes where he belonged.

And then, one day, a grave.]

I could think of a few alternatives.

[He crosses over to the hive nearest him, folding his arms high across his chest.]

You want to know what I want?

[He does not get to the point -- after all, Ana already left him, and that would have been the easiest way to tear him down before getting rid of him too. He'd had plans, as he always did, but none of them were panning out.

Jack isn't the only one who's frustrated with life in its current state of being. Rather than acknowledge the fact that Jack was going to stop him from touching the hives, he lifts his claws to reach for them anyway -- like he's deep in thought.]

You know, Amari was smart to leave you behind here. If she hadn't, I would have taken her other eye, before I killed her in front of you.

[ It is a comfort to her, that he continues to butt heads with her and challenges her, manners present in the polite objection, the attempted denial of her hospitality only to be overridden. Yet much the same should be true in her continued opposition in the face of that, that she'll continue to insist it isn't a bother and take care of him in the simplest of ways without making a fuss about it. It's second nature to her by now, minding others, and she's most at ease when doing so. Commander or no, he's her friend and she'll ensure he's eating well and getting the chance to rest and that he's comfortable around her.

That familiarity is her affection, at the very least, and it's never swayed.

Jack listens to her every word offered, pieces together what he's given to form an abstraction to figure out on his own, put his own thoughts and opinions into, his assumptions perfectly correct and visible in their rapport. There's an ease between them that speaks not only of friendship but of camaraderie, the way she trusts herself at his side and relaxes immediately, shares her expressions openly. It's also in the sly little nudge of her arm to David's at his vague discomfort beside her as she speaks of him, but the gratitude Jack offers him surprises her just as much.

It's only visible in the slight twitch of her brow and the way she looks between them, the slight exasperation in the curl of her lips and a huff of breath entirely fond to offset it. Further still when David turns it back on her and she just shakes her head. A silent enough what am I to do with you for both of them. Then Jack amends it with his own reassurance in her capabilities and her smile only widens further. ]

Well, sometimes there's only so much one can do alone. I think we all know that.

[ They've all been subjected to their own shortcomings without backup, haven't they? But the incline of her head is humble, deferring to Jack with her respect and her gratitude for his words all the same.

Then David remarks on the amount of food she'd served Jack and she tries not to laugh with a mouthful of food, leaving that to Jack to explain before she'd try to jump in. Let him reveal what he wishes, but the mirth in her eyes is plenty amused at being called out. ]

"Oh? Yes, that's what I've been contemplating myself. They would have known so much sooner that we were stuck in cryo if they'd tried to contact us." She blows out a breath before stooping to examine several rocks more closely with her lantern. "But it's not like I can go back in time and get the answers I'd like, can I?" She'll just have to keep moving forward with the hand she was dealt.

"About Overwatch?" she asks, stopping in her examination of these very interesting rocks to sit back on her heels. "Why have you been digging into that?" All Mei knows is that 76 is from her world and knows what Overwatch is. She never would have thought he had some extra interest in it. Is that why he's out here with her? Does he want to get some information out of her? If that's the case, he'd be better off talking to someone like Reinhardt or Angela. Someone who can tell him about their headquarters, since Mei was only stationed there in between trips to different research outposts.

I'm not arguing; you've always seen the bigger picture from another angle. I just wish it had been different.

[ As much as she may have tried to be the angel on his shoulder and remind him of the ideals and values Overwatch was founded upon, it just hadn't been enough. Cutting through politics and red tape was a messy business and Jack had learned better than any of them to navigate those ribbon mazes. At least he knows what her response would be, that she would try to tell him otherwise— that was half the problem, wasn't it? They couldn't always read one another's minds.

Once she settles and he's working to do the same, she feels his heart still pounding in his chest against her arm, hears the staccato of his breathing and the long counts he tries to utilize. Feels his every inhale as a cool rush in her hair, every exhale warm as calloused fingertips catch her hair and stroke. Even with her eyes closed they still flutter.

When he turns into her, she meets him in it to remain pliant at his side, the rock of her fingers swiping side to side smoothing along the crook of his neck, one-two timing to set his breathing to. One-two in, one-two out. One less task for him to mind, the counting.

His reassurance has her nails curling for a moment, shifting her head up against his nose with a little smile. ]

I'm glad; I won't be going anywhere either. And I hope you know I'll always be here to support you. [ Again, just as before. Honestly, even moreso now. ] You should try to get some rest; no one will be coming in without my go-ahead.

Mei frowns, her gaze shifting for a moment to stare at the rocks in deep contemplation. If what he says is true, then she really should be blaming whoever wanted Overwatch to fall, instead of the people caught up in the chaos who forgot about them down in Antarctica. Well, she can blame them a little bit too, but not completely.

Now she meets his covered eyes, a serious look on her face.

"Tell me what you know so far."

Immediately, her forehead creases, because this seems to go against everything the UN stands for, doesn't it? They needed Overwatch to keep the peace too. If they wanted to attack HQ, who would they get to do it?

"Do you think they hired mercenaries?

[ She can feel his every breath in her hair as much as she can in the rise and fall of his chest, the feel of his pulse calming where her hand rests over his neck to brush her fingertips up along his hairline, thumb smoothing the hollow behind his ear when her touch settles a little further.

It's a lot. She knows it's a lot, after all these years on his own and to suddenly have someone pressed against him, but he's too tired to do much more than take it even as he seems to find peace in her presence, and the how of it all doesn't matter anymore.

They'd always had their differences, surely, but he had her utmost respect and she knew that she had held his. Some things never change. His words are muffled against her and all she offers in reply is a smile against his skin and a quiet hum, not wanting to disturb that floating sensation preceding sleep. He deserves to rest, even if it's only a few minutes or a few hours. The hospital has plenty of hands without her.

And despite her promise to keep an eye over him, it lasts a grand total of ten minutes before she, too, gives in. (At least she's a light sleeper.) ]

Mei's eyebrows lift in a nearly comical display. Now that seems a little too far. Talon is the antithesis of everything Overwatch had stood for! Even if the UN wanted them gone, why go to such lengths?

"But that would be so risky! Talon could blackmail the UN and threaten to release proof that the UN was involved, couldn't they?" She gasps. "Is Talon blackmailing the UN now?" Okay, she seems to be on the conspiracy theory bandwagon already. She wants an explanation for being forgotten.
