"Let them in, and take them out."

[ Elena drops the papers down and leans forward with her palms braced against the tabletop. ]
What's really going on here, Nate? You've obviously got beef with this guy. It doesn't smell like the good beef jerky kind.
no subject
[They both suck. He'd probably pick Rafe too, though. He's just a regular asshole, not one with a murderous grudge against Nate.]
Oh, I've got beef. I've got prime rib. Been carrying it around since Rafe flipped out in Panama and got my brother shot.
no subject
You know, they do have surgery options available to help you get rid of those floating ribs if they're bothering you that much.
[ She straightens back, hands still on the table. ]
Wow, okay, so that's news. And you didn't think to bring that up when you were telling me about your brother the first time?
no subject
Why would I? It was more important to talk to you about Sam. [And much harder to do so.] Rafe was just some guy we worked with a decade ago. He's not my favorite person, but I hadn't thought about him in years.
no subject
[ Leaning back from the table completely now and she folds her arms over her chest, leveling him with a look. ]
I'm getting some really mixed signals here.
no subject
[He frowns, out of concern and confusion now.]
Look, Rafe didn't shoot Sam, some guard did. He is why we had to run for it quick, though. I don't know if that makes him responsible—if anything, I blame myself for not being able to pull Sam up after me. But if Rafe hadn't lost it, things wouldn't have happened the way they did.
no subject
[ She trails off and looks away, down to her folded arms. Elena's not just talking about the glimpses of their future they've been given. There's Harry, in particular. Hearing that he blamed himself, that's it. She deflates, shoulders dropping. Her eyes close for a moment and then open again to meet his.
Of course he would blame himself. He'd been the last one holding on to his brother, clinging and refusing to let him go even after he'd been shot.
This is no longer about Rafe.
She doesn't speak up until he's within reach, until her hands are on his arms and rubbing up along his biceps as she puts herself in front of him. ]
Don't do that.
no subject
[Automatically, his hands slide up to rest by her shoulders, keeping her close. It relaxes him, easing some tension he hadn't even noticed was there. Her presence always does that, even when he's baffled by her judgment of certain people.]
no subject
[ Her hands squeeze, knead at the muscle. She can feel how tense he is and now that it's there, now that she realizes she's part (or all) of the reason behind it and sees that tension up close gradually relaxing in his face, damn does she feel a pang of guilt. ]
I'm sorry.
[ This hits a little close to home for her as well— how she feels towards Flynn, how she'd gone so long believing she could've helped him, bullet to the chest or not. How she'd blamed herself. ]
no subject
S'okay. [He forces himself to unclench and gives her a small smile.] So...do you want the full story now?
[He doesn't mind sharing. It's not a fun reminiscence, but it's easier knowing it has a different ending than he used to think. And it's relevant, now that Rafe is here.]
no subject
[ How was Rafe Adler the cause of Sam getting shot? What had the man done that triggered the change in her husband? His brother being supposedly dead for all those years aside, losing the only real family he'd had left.
That little smile of his draws the touch of a fingerpad to skirt the corner edge of his bottom lip. It also brings out a tiny smile to mirror his, before it slips into a more serious look.
Quietly she then adds, ]
Should I be watching my back?
no subject
[He's not completely sure of that, given the man's clear distaste for Nate's willingness to walk away from Avery's trail, but sneering at his level of dedication is a far cry from wanting to hurt his loved ones.
He sits back to perch on the table, hands gripping the edge.]
So, here's how it went down. Rafe got us into the prison by bribing the warden—plenty of money, no questions. It was my job to start a yard fight as an excuse for Vargas to throw me in "solitary" [air quotes], otherwise known as the old prison where Henry Avery's first mate Jonathan Burnes had been kept; climb the remains of the tower; and look around for anything hidden that he'd left behind. Which I did.
[He shrugs.]
The first complication came when Vargas read letter from Burnes that he was holding for us and decided he wanted in. Wasn't a big deal, though, I just lied about finding anything and hid the Saint Dismas cross I found in the cell.
Would've gone smoothly from there if the guy I fought with in the yard hadn't come back with friends for round two. Vargas found the cross when he broke it up.
no subject
That's why you showed up with a black eye and cut on your lip... [ A quiet murmur to herself, all of the pieces falling in place one by one. She remembered the mention of Vargas. There was no forgetting when and how that conversation had taken place. ]
And then what had happened to you then?
no subject
Vargas dragged us back to his office, super pissed, and tried to renegotiate the terms of our deal with him. Guess he figured since we needed him to get out when we were done in there, he had one over on us now that he knew we'd found something.
I figured what the hell? Agree to an equal cut of the treasure. We'd just cut and run on him once we got out, so what difference did it make?
[God, Rafe had been stupid. They were never in any danger of actually having to deal out more Vargas. Why not play along for a while? For the sake of his pride?]
It would have been fine, except instead of sealing the deal with a handshake, Rafe whipped out a shiv and stabbed him. Vargas got a gunshot off before he died, and that was it. We had to run, Sam got shot, and only Rafe and I made it out of there.
[And if not for Rafe shaking him out of his shock, Nate wouldn't have made it either. He can't bring himself to be particularly grateful for that.]
no subject
But what was his reason for stabbing Vargas? What was the point? Did it have something to do with having to split the treasure?
[ Elena pushes off the table and her arms cross, stepping forward. ]
Rafe is rich. He's so rich he's both pissing and crapping money.
no subject
[Christ. If he'd known Rafe cared that much about someone getting greedy, he never would have consented to working with him. Not that Nate had planned to screw him over, he hadn't, but dealing with that sort of complication was just part of the business, he figured. They were thieves; adhering strictly to whatever was first stipulated was for contract lawyers.]
Stabbing someone at the first bump in the road was not part of the plan. Never welch on a deal with Rafe Adler, I guess.
no subject
Money isn't everything.
[ She shakes her head as she goes to his side of the table, staring down at the papers but not really seeing them. ]
I'll get never how some of you thieves work.
no subject
[Maybe it's a coddled rich kid thing. Or it's because of how he was raised. Or maybe that's just Rafe, down to the bone.]
He just wants the glory of the discovery. I could tell him it's not worth much in the end. [He snorts.] Like I should be giving anyone advice. I actually kept working with Rafe for a few months after, if you can believe that.
no subject
[ Said with love. Elena turns to lean back against the edge, side of her hand touching his. ]
You shouldn't be giving anyone advice but...you do know from experience. [ Aside from that difference of a week between them. ] Did you...? He was the clog in the design, he was the one who got your brother shot— was it because you had no one else to go to after you two escaped the prison?
Where was Sully..?
no subject
I went back to Sully afterward, told him what happened. He knew what we were gonna do, but he thought we were crazy to go to prison on purpose.
[He'd been right.]
He was there for me, and I let him look after me for a bit...but then I flew to Scotland and spent a few months helping Rafe look for any sign of the treasure at the Saint Dismas cathedral. I think I just didn't know what else to do. I was in shock, still, and here was this thing that Sam died for. Made as much sense as anything else.
Didn't work, though. I did my part, but my head wasn't in the game and Rafe knew it. By the time I left, we were both ready to be done with each other.
no subject
[ It would be in poor form for her to ask if he'd had a date with Big Bubba so instead she stays there quiet and keeps listening. ]
You were grieving. It was a big hit for you to take. [ She toes at the ground for a moment, looking down before she glances over. ] He...said something about that. That you two butted heads. Things got rocky before you two parted ways.
no subject
Yeah, pretty much. It wasn't any one thing that drove us apart. He was focused on picking up Avery's trail and I was going through the motions.
[And going through the local girls.]
It wasn't like I even wanted to work with him in the first place. That was Sam's call. What a crappy one it turned out to be, huh?
no subject
[ Her pinky brushes along his, hooks gently over top. ]
You have to remember, Nate - Sam's not dead. You'll get to see him again. We both will.
no subject
[He squeezes her pinky with his and gives her a small smile.]
Is it terrible to wish that one of the Ingresses would spit him out? I should be hoping to get home, get back to our lives, but I don't want to wait for that.
no subject
[ The pinky squeeze and smile get returned, her shoulder leaning into his. ]
It isn't terrible, no. We don't know much about what will happen when we get back. It's probably a good idea to enjoy some time while we're here.
