"Let them in, and take them out."

[He meant to sort of address the whole room, anyone around him. But given he ended up accidentally standing over the short human, that's probably who's going to hear him best.]
[At least he's not making a threat. Just sort of huddling up with his arms around himself.]
no subject
[At least, he hoped nothing could surprise him. And if it did surprise him, he hoped that ,at the very least, whatever it was was on tehir side.]
I don't know. I really don't know.
[Varric wanted to say more -- that he hoped that they wouldn't go home. But that had more to do with him, and nothing to do with the thing beside him.]
no subject
Man... I thought that's what was supposed to happen when we got here. Like, stuff would all be cool again.
Y'know?
no subject
I don't know what they promised you, but this is all new to me. In my experience though, more often than not, people get this wrong. [Maybe this was an unfamiliar situation for the crew of the Moira, maybe the thing next to him had never been in faced with something like this. But Varric had thought purging the Qunari would be the end of Kirkwall's woes. He thought closing the breach would settle things for the Inquisition. Both times, he had been wrong.]
no subject
But now we're here. And... y'know.
[He awkwardly gestures around them. At a loss for words.]
no subject
[But he wasn't going to sit there with his thumb up his ass, either.]
I'm sure they'll figure it out. I've made my fair share of brainless leaders. These guys? Not like that.
[Admittedly, there was a fair amount of ass-talk happening on the writer's part. He barely knew the captains, and certainly couldn't evaluate their character fully.]
[But so far at least, they'd been diligent. That would have to be enough.]
no subject
[He perks up a little, though, looking at him like Varric's suddenly speaking incredible truth or something. He's like 18 in robot years okay, this is rough.]
[A beat or two later, he blinks, and then offers down a hand. Sideswipe isn't as massive as a lot of bots, but he's still pushing fifteen feet -- needless to say he's careful.]
Oh right, sorry. S'up dude. I'm Sideswipe.
no subject
[The look Varric gave the hand was between speculative and disbelieving. He thought he'd been taking the whole thing in stride, but being offered a robot hand?]
[His new book was getting more and more unbelievable.]
Tethras. Varric Tethras. [He set a palm on the top of one of his fingers, blinking as he did. How the kid thought he would actually shake his hand, he didn't know.]
Don't worry. It's all gonna be fine, kid.
no subject
['Dude' is apparently a staple of his vocabulary. He bounces his finger a bit, like he's shaking a hand. In all the time he's been around humans and human-shaped people, he's had some practice at handshakes.]
Yeah... I hope so. I'm kinda tired of everything going to scrap.
no subject
[He might have liked to see the Moira in her prime. Or maybe that was his need for a mug of ale speaking and a warm bed speaking.]
[It didn't matter. Instead of looking back on what he had missed, he had something to look forward to. Already, he had begun daydreaming about overflowing cups and beds stacked high with furs.]
[Or whatever the bullshit future equivalent was.]
Guessing you've been here longer than me? [He turned his head to the towering metal man, a brow quirked.]
no subject
[He laughs a bit, spreading out his hands and waggling his fingers.]
We totally partied for like two years on this one planet. It was awesome. I mean, for us bots. 'Cause like, two years is nothing to me. I'm already a thousand or so.
[He sounds super proud of that.]
Yeah. A while. I kinda forgot.
no subject
[Varric pushed the thought to the back of his head. He could think about it later, when he wasn't trying to have a conversation. He doubted that the creature beside him wanted to hear about his problems.]
You really didn't notice two years passing you by? [This was a much better conversation to have.]
no subject
[Sideswipe that's not why most people swear when you say it. They say it because the entire crew partied for two years. That's a long time for people.]
[He just shrugs in answer.]
Dude. Two years is like... nothing to us. The old timers around here are like... millions of years old.
no subject
[Though Varric doubted he would forget anything he had been told in the past few minutes, after a few minutes of stunned contemplation, he picked up his pencil. He spent a span of a few minutes quickly scribbling down everything he had been told.]
Anyone ever tell you you don't act your age? [Varric's brows furrowed after he spoke. He supposed his behavior made sense, in context, if his elders truly were a million years old.]
no subject
[The guy's real name is Ultra Magnus but good luck getting that one out of Sideswipe. He's also probably not even the oldest, but that's who Sideswipe is taking his irritation out on, apparently.]
[Then he scowls.]
What's that supposed to mean, man?
no subject
[At Sideswipe's sudden shift in mood, Varric raised a hand, motioning for calm.]
I've met some centuries old spirits before, is all. Usually they're very... [There were no words for how droll they were.] They're not like you. I actually like you.
no subject
[He even rolls his optics as he says it. He'd never really forgiven Magnus. Not really. He could pretend to, around Riptide, but not truly.]
[It was too hard.]
They're boring, right? Like super mega boring? Megabores?
no subject
Yeah, they're boring. [He snorted at 'megabores.'] But you aren't. Hence, not acting your age.
no subject
[he hasn't seen him in a while, though. And while Sideswipe doesn't really wish Magnus dead, the reprieve is sort of nice.]
Uh, dude. All 'bots my age act like this unless they're like. Weird.
[No they don't.]
no subject
[Varric squinted up at the 'bot,' almost annoyed for a brief moment, before another wave of mirth overtook him.]
Guess there's a difference between bots and spirits, huh?
no subject
You got it, dude!
no subject
You're a good kid. [Is it wrong to call someone clearly older than him a kid? Nope, not at all.]
no subject
I'd rather be a cool hero. Y'know?
[He appreciates it, Varric. But on the other hand, he's just tire of being a kid. Of not being "mature enough".]
no subject
[Weird.]
Tell you what. My next book'll feature a cool hero. Extremely tall. Made of metal. Goes by the name of Sideswipe. How 'bout that?
no subject
[Look at him perk up in curiosity.]
What's a book?
[Please don't murder him, Varric, he comes from Robot Planet.]
