"Let them in, and take them out."

Is that it? [Another short laugh chokes its way out of him, still devoid of humor and somewhat telling of the fear and disappointment he's hiding.]
Do I give the impression that I expect to singlehandedly save the world and ride off into the sunset with my true love? I know the path I chose. I'm not turning from it now.
no subject
[He managed neither.]
"Is that it?" [Varric's laugh was bitter.] You kill innocent people, blondie. Your "true love" [A scoff.] kills you in return.
Whatever Justice you wanted got left behind. You got so consumed by Vengeance that you let it destroy you.

That does sound like it would make for a good story. [His words are a quiet, subdued rage, but his upset is obviously biting.]
Maybe you've seen more of my future than I have. And maybe you're from a place entirely different, where Hawke is a man, the Hero of Ferelden didn't die ending the Blight, and nugs fly around on butterfly wings. I am not lounging around here while newborns never get to feel their mothers' touch, Harrowed mages are made Tranquil against their will, and good, kind people like Bethany Hawke rot in glorified dungeons. If I destroy myself trying to stop any of that, I can die a fulfilled man.

It doesn't stop with your death. Kirkwall falls, and with it go the rest of the Circles. Innocent mages die because Templars can't tell the difference between Apostate and bystander.
It doesn't take long for someone to sow the chaos. Hundreds more people die in the result. [Varric looked back, expression torn between hurt and anger.]
Hawke is one of them.
[Varric opened up the notebook, landing on the page that the new pencil had been tucked into. He grabbed it and held it back out to Anders.]
[Shame washed over the dwarf. He had trusted Anders, believed wholeheartedly that this younger man, the one that could laugh about Sebastian and other such jokes, might have had it in him to change his path.]
[But he'd been wrong.]
Two of my friends died for you. Kirkwall bled because of you. And you'd still do it all again. [Varric dropped the pencil at Anders feet.] Keep the damn thing. I don't need it.

He rises as well, fists balled at his sides as he blatantly ignores the attempted return of his gift.]
Just who are you trying to fool? Templars already murder who they want, when they want, and they'll keep doing it as long as we allow them to. I don't want war, but if they wage it, there's nothing to do but fight back.
I'm not like you or anyone in Thedas, Varric. I can't just look after me and my own and forget about everyone else. Ignoring this would destroy me faster than acting on it. I'm sorry if you feel that's selfish of me.
[He doesn't want to walk away on this note, not after they'd seemed to mend what he now knows was the problem all along, but Anders can't see a way to fix it now. If Varric believes this is the only possible future for him, what can he possibly do to change his mind? So he just shakes his head and makes for somewhere, anywhere else.]

[The dwarf had convinced himself that once, he and Anders were friends. It was obvious now how wrong he was. The thought seemed to cool the fire churning within his belly, leaving only a chill in his gut.]
[After a few moments of grumbling under his breath, Varric threw himself back into his seat. He glowered down at the previously discarded pencil, toying with the thought of throwing it far from him. Instead he picked it up and tucked it back into the notebook.]
[It wouldn't be long until he lost Anders again. He couldn't bear to part with the gift -- for all he knew, it would be the only thing to remember the mage by.]
