It's a defensive maneuver, he knows—if he gets the information through a filter, it's a little easier to process. He's not sure what he would do or how he'd feel if he got to know more about who Ahab is as a person.
There's definitely such a thing as too much information, and it's Miller's insistence on clarifying his original point that's more incriminating than anything else.
