[ It's not confidence so much as it used to be practicality -- everyone who would see him without the helmet knew exactly what was wrong and how it happened, and you can't really wear anything with the helmet but no one can see through the visor anyway. When he wound up on the ship with a bunch of civilians, well... people were polite enough. There's really no way he could hide all of the damage without some sort of mask, anyway. York's just accepted his scarring as a part of him. He's still self conscious but it really just doesn't come up as often as you'd think.
