[In hindsight, he shouldn't be at all surprised to find that all he's doing is irritating the program. There's something to be said for the old adage about poking the sleeping bear. Peter should know better by now, especially without any powers of his own.
But Peter should have known better about a lot of things. It's never stopped him before.
He takes a step back when Rinzler changes stance. He widens his own, arms back up in that surrendering sort of pose. He's really not here to fight and he's not let himself think long enough about J, about the shot and about her second death, to be depressed enough to provoke Rinzler intentionally. But Rinzler relaxes, or at least doesn't leap into action, and Peter lets himself do the same.
The next reaction is surprisingly clear.]
Come on, you're not stupid. [He almost feels bitter to admit it. Rinzler had more going for him when it came to brains that Peter thinks he'll ever have. Even Jean was more adamant that he'd become brave in the future rather than smart.] You have to have noticed by now that the people who had, you know, powers don't have them anymore. The people who weren't all human are now totally human.
Suddenly all human. [He sighs, gestures to himself. It's hard to admit out loud that he's lost his mutation even to his friends. He doesn't know if he can find the words now.] I guess I was just curious if it effected- [A vague gesture toward Rinzler.] -those like you. If all of us got screwed over.
