If the circumstances had been different, if he'd still had his powers or the ship hadn't crashed or whatever had come over J that day had never happened, she would have been one of the first faces he'd go looking for. But circumstances weren't different. It wasn't that he was avoiding her, per say, it was just that he didn't seek her out once Lizzie had given him the go ahead to leave. Seeing her now, when he feels like he's hit a new low point, isn't exactly how he hoped things would go once he finally decided they should meet again.
"You always did know how to sweet talk me," Peter says, voice forcefully even. The feedback loop of the water and exhaustion made it easier to keep himself steady. He simply didn't have the energy to run away or to be nervous. It didn't keep him from looking over her though, worried searching over everything she had to offer. At least she looked alive, healthy. She looked better than he felt and some small part of him found comfort in that.
