He's still grinning in that unhinged manner, but there's something else there too. Something else behind that manic front.
It doesn't fade though, because what would be the point in showing one's hand immediately? Instead, he summons nearly every vestige of magic he has access to and aims it directly at Asriel in one bright, lightning shaped bolt. Not just the interpretation of what this world takes his magic to be--but an actual magical bullet.
It's small, but by no means weak...and for a moment, he can see where he's aiming, he can see because it's his turn. His turn, and the rules are clear.
