Who: Anyone. Maybe you!
When: Post-Shadows event
Where: Region 4
What: The search and rescue event for a piece of equipment to further stabilize the Ingress
Warnings: Probable violence
The immediate danger has passed once the Ingress comes back online, but it's too early to rest easy. The vast, complex machine has never malfunctioned like this before, and it is not yet back up to full capacity.
As the offworlders have already proven their ability to help once, the call comes again in the aftermath of near-disaster: there is an item, a piece of equipment scarcely bigger than a shoebox that nonetheless has the power to stabilize the Ingress and increase everyone's chances at survival. Left behind in the evacuation of an observation station in Region 4, it should be easy to retrieve...if not for the invasion of the squirrel-sized creatures that have made their way into the underwater building, and if only any of the evacuees could recall which specific laboratory it was being used in when left.
Those who answer the call will fine that the labyrinthine facility is operating at half-power, with faint dripping sounds heard throughout the damp, dimly-lit halls and labs. Quiet scuttling could be shrugged off as a trick of the mind until one comes face to face with one of the invaders, whose teeth are sharp and can cause an intense sensation of burning, itching or (bizarrely) tickling with a single bite. And they move in groups.
Good luck, brave visitors...

boss monster encounter; closed to rng
The group that eventually reaches the hangar-sized lab where the piece of equipment they seek is located will find more of these creatures...and their enormous parent.]
Re: boss monster encounter; closed to rng
And then she glances out a window and sees a fish dart by, and just for a moment, she imagines the place as it might be meant to be -- a border between air and water, full of possibility. One moment of wonder, then she hears a noise and feels something hitting her shield, and the labyrinth closes in on her again.
She spins a thin bolt of red energy at the amphibians behind her, sets it crackling among them, enough to force them to retreat, and resets the thin layer of energy shielding that she's been holding around her. She's in low energy mode; using her powers mostly for sensing and protection and dispersing the amphibians, and trying not to damage the facility.
After all, she's here to help.
And if she hasn't read the map wrong, she's almost there. That thick metal door-- But Wanda can hear more amphibians behind her, quite a crowd, rustling in the shadows, so she quickens her pace. And then, as amphibians spill into the hall behind her, begins to run. She uses her powers to open the door in front of her and races through onto a metal balcony running around the edges of the hangar-like lab, connecting multiple doors. On the main floor there are additional ways to enter, but that's not what captures Wanda's attention.
The door slams shut behind her, and Wanda stops running. Backs up to the thick metal door and puts her back to it.]
I hope that you are not also here for the device. [She says it dryly, nominally to the giant creature; her eyes are fixed on it, waiting to see what it does.]

The big creature, though, now that's another thing altogether. Once he hears the sound of something big, he's bolting towards it, knocking the smaller creatures out of his way with the shield and taking a few out with an ax where necessary. He sees Wanda ahead, dispersing the amphibians; she's a mage, then, so he figures she'll most likely need some solid backup.]
Hey! [He approaches her, cautiously, not wanting to further provoke the big creature. He's speaking in a loud whisper, with his shield out in front of him.] Think we're fighting this thing?

Even so, his armor isn't operating at anything near full capacity after several unfortunate encounters with shadow people (sporting terrible attitudes, might he add), which is why he lets Wanda and Magnus take point when it comes to brute forcing their way further in to the bowels of the lab; he's dedicated entirely to the task of locating the device they need, and nothing else. His dedication to the Ingress means he wants that thing found and fixed - yesterday.
He's so busy scanning the room for mechanical objects that he doesn't catch on to what the others have found until they're already addressing it.
Of course. ]
Y'know, I've seen enough movies to guess we're not gonna get much of a choice.

Lacking a scientific mindset, though, Snake had figured that he should pitch in where he actually could help, and if that means putting himself in danger in order to track down some pivotal item, then so be it.
He's fast on the heels of the rest of the group as they converge on the center of the facility, which is where the readings have led them. It shouldn't come as any real surprise that there's something guarding it, although Snake still gives the massive cephalopod a withering look. ]
We can try to sneak around it, but somehow I'm guessing it's not that stupid.
[ Good thing he's come prepared, as armed as he can be. He even has a homemade explosive on him; he should have known it'd come in handy someday. ]

but still. ]
I mean, if it's friends with all these little fish, the whole like. Big fish, small pond idea just gets worse. [ he's landed on a railing near enough to where most of the others seem to have paused to survey the whole... whatever it is, somewhat near the ones who seem to be more keen on barreling in and somewhat closer to whomever seems to be holding back. old and new habits, in reverse order. ] I'm not wrong, right?

It will protect its children.
A piercing screech rings through the air, sound vibrations so heavy that they alone might knock the unprepared off their feet. But that's not the only weapon at the creature's disposal.
Three tentacles shoot out in the general direction of the intruders. Skin so thick it might as well be armored protects one side of each tentacle; the other is covered by suction cup-like appendages that secrete a mucus that burns faintly, but that might not even matter, as it intends to squeeze.]

Okay, gents! And lady! No idea what any of your classes are, but if you need protection, keep behind me.

he's also trying to web tentacles to solid-looking parts of the architecture, to keep them from being so... tentacley. ] Protection like what? Is it shooting things?

[ Tony busies himself blasting anything that comes within three feet of him (not counting allies - generously), but he feels personally vindicated, since he's definitely seen this in about a dozen scifi movies. He's a prophet. Pretty soon the thing's gonna explode into thousands of tiny tentacle babies, or something. ]
Offering to take on a tentacle army for a group of relative strangers is damn generous, Volcano, I'm impressed.

He also darts out of the way of the flinging tentacles, and when some of the mucus lands on him it's a good reminder of why he always wears his sneaking suit into situations like this one. It's generally a good idea to make sure you don't have any exposed skin.
This isn't going to be an easy fight, though, he can already tell. He pulls out his handgun for now, not interested in getting too close if he doesn't have to. When one of the tentacles gets stuck to the wall by some kind of webbing from spandex kid, Snake takes the easy shot, aiming for the suction cup side.
Directed to spandex kid: ] It's secreting something. [ And then to the group as a whole: ] We should make sure all of its arms are incapacitated before we try to get any closer.
[ He's got a small bomb they can use for the final blow, if needed, though Stark probably has the explosive side of things covered with that suit of his. ]

It understands the concept of pain, though, and frustration, as several of its tentacles are immobilized. Not all, though, and its rage means it's still dangerous for anyone to approach directly, despite the opening that's been made.
At the sight and sound of their parents' screeching, the children dive beneath two of its waving tentacles, to be protected and to protect against anyone who ventures too close.]

[He doesn't respond to Tony's comment; he'll probably preen later, but right now he's too focused on the fight. It's just his typical role to put himself in danger so others don't get hurt; he can't do so much damage on his own, but he can take a hit.
When Snake suggests incapacitating its arms, he nods and raises his axe, but pauses once he sees the smaller monsters scurry under it for protection.]
Hang on a sec, boys. Think those are babies? [He's still in his protective stance, shield out and axe raised, staying crouched only just out of striking range, but he's frowning.] Maybe we can do this a different way. Can we fix whatever needs to be fixed while this big guy's distracted? Maybe gunk up some more of the tentacles? If he's just trying to defend all these little ones we might not need to take him down.
[He's not exactly a fan of hurting animals who are just reacting out of fear or defensiveness. But also, more pragmatically, it might be less dangerous.
He creeps further out of the way, and, with his shield still up, he sheathes his axe and instead draws out his long lance, which looks exactly like the ornate minutehand of a clocktower, and starts tying a long piece of rope to the end of it. Once that's done, he's going to throw it like a spear, aiming for it to stick into the side of the creature's body.]

peter lands on a wall and pauses to evaluate the whole scenario, because, okay, yeah, if this thing isn't just being some kind of weird b-list movie monster for no reason and it's trying to protect those little horrifying piranha angler fish things, then maybe blowing it to pieces isn't necessary. maybe.
his eyes widen suddenly and he shoots off a web to swing away, mostly avoiding the sudden thwap to the wall where he just was, but not enough to avoid bouncing off another armored tentacle and splashing into the surface of the water. he's back up in the air almost immediately though, and tries to web the first one to the wall it's not too far away from yet. ] Okay, so anybody know where the thing is yet?

Working on it.
[ The suit has the benefit of JARVIS and a HUD, which makes scanning their surroundings much easier than it would be otherwise, given the tentacles, low light, baby piranha, and general terribleness. He side-steps out of the way of a trashing tentacle as he puts his full attention on finding the damn thing they're looking for. Which is equipment of very vague description, but, can't win 'em all.
Hopefully somebody's covering him, 'cause he didn't bother to ask. ]

If they reach a point where someone's life is at stake, though, Snake isn't going hesitate to take some killing shots. Maybe everyone else here is squeamish about killing, but it's what he was trained for, and he's more than capable of doing the dirty work.
As things are, spandex kid and lance kid are trying to keep the monster restrained while Stark is busy scanning for the real reason that they're here, so it falls to Snake to play bodyguard for him now. He moves next to the red-and-gold suit of armor, on the lookout for any more tentacles coming their way.
When one lashes toward him Snake flings an arm out to try and shove it away, but predictably, the tentacle curls around his forearm with a surprising amount of strength and attempts to yank him toward the catwalk's railing. He drops his gun for lack of a better option and then uses his free hand to quickly reach for the survival knife he'd brought with him.
The question is, what happens first? Is this thing going to yank him clear off the balcony or is he going to manage to slice himself free? ]

Unable to move to lash out against the intruders as it would like as long as its children are huddled close to it, inhibiting its movement, the creature shrieks and lets out a strange gurgling sound before beginning to vomit black ink in all directions for a good fifteen seconds straight. It's pretty disgusting, but not otherwise harmful—just very, very slippery.
That accomplished, it continues thrashing its tentacles, damaging lab equipment and breaking open storage units—some of which contain equipment that just might be what they're looking for.]
