"Let them in, and take them out."

Milk Plant

He doesn't actually expect to hit the kid. Sniper's aim or not, he'd probably have to be using his rifle to get any sort of ammunition up to the speeds Peter gets up to.
no subject
"No way. Do you know my age? You should just be glad I didn't make a worse joke."
no subject
The tone is wry but there are under notes of humor written between the words. Nihlus wipes the milk from his brow plates and sits up, grinning.
"Since you're not thirty, I'm guessing 'two'."
no subject
He's still grinning. Peter crouches down to be at Nihlus level, drawing a finger through the mess on the floor.
"Nope. I'm totally an adult, technically. Big 18 and everything."
no subject
"So, big 18, huh?" he says, reaching out to nab a towel from the pile. At this angle, the fact that Nihlus is now missing his right arm from the shoulder down is... well. It's a thing. "You're socially obligated to not make worse jokes then?"
no subject
“Ouch dude. Point taken.” Peter couldn’t exactly defend himself against that. He still remembered how he acted when first meeting the monsters. “Do you need someone to give them a stern talking to? Put those mean humans in their place?”
Peter’s joking, mostly. He may have started mentioning to newcomers about treating the monsters well months back. He wouldn’t mind doing the same now. As long as he was never caught at it, of course. He had a reputation to uphold.
“Yup.” He pops on the ‘p’, grinning. “No dude, I think that just means I have to pay taxes. Nothing about humor in the adult rulebook.”
no subject
Yeah, as far as the Hierarchy was concerned, they'd gotten into a spat over legality where the humans tended to regard their first contact as a war.
"If it's any comfort, it doesn't look like taxes are going to be anything to worry about in the near future. Or military drafting."
no subject
“Taxes, probably not. It would be kind of hard to enact some kind of system like that up here. Not like any of us are getting paid anyway.” He shrugged. “We might not have a real military to worry about, but I wouldn’t say that keeps us from being sort of drafted. Every big problem we’ve had around here, well. It’s not like we’ve had a choice but to fight back.”

The fight with the Caducans, the slaver outpost, the monster infestation- and more. Always more, always one thing after another. And then the Monolith and J being turned into a Husk...
"How have you been hanging on anyways?" the Spectre asks, tones soft.
no subject
"Doing better, now that the powers are back." But he suspects that's not exactly what Nihlus is asking. "Everything's in working order again. So. You know. Could be worse."
no subject
It's an old unfairness though, one that Nihlus isn't sure anymore how to dispute. Necessity never cared about unfairness or age. Necessity was callous, cold and cruel.
"Peter," he starts and then stops, trying to find the words before just- exhaling quietly and rolling his shoulder.
"You wanna have a go at this stupid plant?"
