far from nowhere
"the trees rustle in the evening when we stand uneasy before our own thoughts."

With the events of Del Pascia behind the Moira, things are only now beginning to settle—and not very well. Through the combined efforts of some of the crew, D-E-L and her permanent residents were incinerated into the dust of space. While it’s not the most peaceful end, it is one, and not many are going to be thinking back on how nice Del Pascia’s facilities were for quite some time. Repairing what they could of the ship’s interior and putting as much distance between the Moira and the prison as possible, those aboard are informed by Navigation that they are approaching another planet. This means, of course, the potential for better supplies, as some things are beginning to dwindle, and the Captains elect to dock so long as the crew follows protocol.
WELCOME TO AMISSIS-RE

Amissis-Re is an unregistered planet with no documented histories or signs of life. The Moira’s Navigation crew have scanned the planet for any usable resources and have discovered a faint signal emitting from beneath the surface of Amissi-Re. Using the transporters and any other crafts located in the Cargo Bay, the crew are able to travel to the source of the signal. Upon arriving in its exact location, they’ll find a small series of lakes that lead to a tower-like structure that appears to be in use. Crew must cross a poorly assembled bridge system that sways and dips when weight is applied to it in order to gain access to the entrance. Once there, a woman comes out to greet them and explains, excitedly, that she is so very happy that they have come to Amissis-Re.

Everyone can go home.

Their host insists that she has done the impossible and has somewhat fixed the Ingress that’s been built on Amissis-Re a long time ago, and what’s more, she can send crew home for short bursts of time. Upon following this woman inside, crew will find that the planet is not, in fact, barren at all. Diving deep into the underbelly of Amissis-Re, it’s like an eternal factory of machines, and while vast, for whatever reason, it also seems incredibly welcoming...

LEAP OF FAITH ( 05.01 and on )
The barren planet of Amissis-Re is devoid of vegetation and organic life except for a lone woman, and the planet itself is an intricate honeycomb of machines that go for miles below the surface. Yet, that seems insignificant and unimportant in comparison to the news that the crew has just received. After Thán has looked at the Ingress, he tells the crew that he cannot say for certain that it is properly functioning, but Emiri native, Ben Link, will volunteer to test it out.

An elevator takes crew down to a glass platform that overlooks an inverted Ingress portal. In order to return home, the Moirans will have to take a leap of faith and jump in. Ben, in order to show his commitment to the crew and willingness to help get them home, takes that jump with Captain Thán seconds behind him. Jumping feels like dropping through wind; lights swirl, it’s warm, and a soft buzzing encompasses you as you fall. You don’t feel the landing. One moment you’re falling, and the next, you’re in a new world.

A few hours pass before a similar elevator rises from below and to the left of the Ingress, stopping beside the platform. Ben and Thán step out unharmed.

It works, and everyone can temporarily go home. Will you jump?

COMBINE THE EXTREMES ( 05.01 and on )
The woman that greeted the crew and led them to the platform will allow anyone that wants to go home the opportunity to go. There’s only one catch: it’s not permanent. She’s worked for years to fix the Ingress so that she can return to her own home but hasn’t been able to make the trip an everlasting one. Everyone always comes back. Always. They go for a few hours, at first, but that amount of time increases with each visit.

The one guideline, she says, is that you can’t go alone. Each trip requires a partner, or it becomes too much for the mind to bear. These rules are simple: the world takes shape depending on who jumps first, but if crew go hand-in-hand and leap at the same time, the worlds combine. This new world will be populated with people that existed in both and may appear to be a jarring combination of both worlds. It may seem unusual, but if the woman is asked, she’ll explain that the combined world does exist as there are more universes than can be imagined. The Ingress tries to take the person to their own home, their original home, but when jumping together, it finds the closest possible match and deposits them there instead.

From that point on, you can travel the world together or split up, but remember, this world is a living, functioning world. It doesn’t matter if it’s the home of one crew member or a combination. You meet other people. You can get hurt. You influence and are influenced by others.

Be cautious, and enjoy your visit “home”.

LINGER ON ( 05.05 and on )
The more times the Amissis-Re Ingress is visited, the more it seems that your trips last longer and the experience becomes even more vivid. More real and harder to distinguish from the current reality that you know. It’s difficult to explain why, but you get the feeling that maybe if you went without the aid of the host, that perhaps you’d be able to stay. Forever. It takes some subterfuge, but in time, you see your chance: she’s nowhere in sight, and you take it.

The world you are in now is completely your own, whether another crew member accompanied you or not. The people you know are there, everything around you is exactly as you remember. A few hours pass, and you don’t feel that familiar tug, that invisible hook at the base of your spine that signals that your visit is over. Even more time goes by, and you’re still in that world, your home. When the first day has passed, you begin to question if you’ll ever go back, or if life on the Moira was all a dream. The person with you won’t be able to convince you otherwise, and they’ll start to feel less real, a stranger that you used to know.

There’s only one way to go back to the Moira. Someone from the other side has to come in and retrieve you both. Once in, contact with a third will jump-start a link through the Ingress, and it will pull all crew back to the platform.

ensuing jumps

[Leia had painted a vivid picture of what a world beyond the desert could be like, but no matter how she'd hung on those stories, the girl just couldn't make her imagination keep up. And now, standing where she can see what feels like endless green and breath air devoid of a chemical aftertaste, for once she wants to thank that lack of inner vision.

Nothing she could have imagined could have possibly compared to this.]

It's like dreamin'.

[She's too awed for there to even be excitement in her tone. She just keeps blinking slowly, like she can't quite believe what's in front of her eyes.]

You grew up with all this?

[personal profile] imahologram 2016-05-04 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I promised I'd show you what Alderaan looked like, if I could.

[And this is exactly right, a day in late spring or early summer, like something out of a story. Leia watches the girl's reaction, taking in her dumbfounded stare and letting her grow accustomed to their surroundings.]

Everything except that over there-- [She gestures toward the horizon, where the fresh green plains are eaten away into desert scrub and sand.] This is what my home looked like when I was your age.

Yeah.

[She had. And the girl is suddenly grateful for it. She thinks of the wistful way some runners spoke of the world before the war and wonders if it could have ever compared to this. Some part of her wishes she could show them this. Carry the memory back for Dr. D to share on the radio. Take a picture for Gertie to put up in the orphanage.

She takes a moment to let the emotions fill her and pass, before looking off to the area Leia is pointing to. There's a familiarity there in seeing the distant sand and that hits hard in her chest, that a piece of something like home could exist even here. She has to clear her throat before she can talk.]

You must have loved it. [She glances up to Leia almost shyly.] Show me 'round?
imahologram: (twenty-seven.)

[personal profile] imahologram 2016-05-13 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I did. [It's a little sad-edged, the smile she gives the girl, but they don't have time to waste on old sorrows.] I think you will, too.

[Bias? Maybe. But they're going to have a nice afternoon here if Leia has anything to say about it. And as they walk through the sweet-scented plains grass toward the palace, she hears a familiar little buzz off to their left.]

Oh--a bee, Bee. [She gestures in the direction of the sound, where a heavy little insect is wobbling from one bright pink blossom to another.]

[She smiles and considers for a moment about taking Leia’s hand, a show of comfort and solidarity. Perhaps a showing of gratitude for a memory the girl knows she won’t soon forget. The moment passes and she follows Leia with her hands stuck in her pockets.

Her attention is everywhere at once, loath to miss any of the scenery. She has to take it all in, record every detail for when she relays this again to Kobra. For if the other boys come, if Party does and she can hand over her paints to watch him bring the scene back to life. She’s so absorbed in staring that she nearly misses Leia’s exclamimation, trance only broken by the quick gestures.

The moment she spots the bee is obvious, her eyes widening and a squeal forcing out of her throat. She bounds toward it, still pleased even as it flies away.]

It’s a round little thing! What’s it doin’?
imahologram: (two.)

[personal profile] imahologram 2016-05-16 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Leia follows, watching the girl's obvious delight with a smile on her face.]

See how it flies into the flowers? [Here's an old, old lesson, one she recalls from being the girl's age.] It's collecting something called nectar from them. When it goes back to its hive, it'll use the nectar to make honey.

[A pause. If she's never seen bees before...] You've never had honey, have you?
kidjoy: Live version of the girl in full costume standing determined ([Firm])

[personal profile] kidjoy 2016-05-21 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
No. [Her expression turns sheepish.] Kinda thought honey was just a nickname. Somethin' ya called people ya liked. Is it supposed to be a food?

[If it was, she wasn't surprised she'd never had it. There was a lot of culinary creations on the Moira she'd never heard of before. The lack of resources at home made it easy to miss out on the simple treats everyone else was used to.]

So ya get bees to make food for ya?
imahologram: (forty-eight.)

[personal profile] imahologram 2016-05-21 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes--it's a spread, a sweet one. When you call someone "honey," it means you think they're sweet, too.

[The girl, sweet. Leia has the feeling she might buck that particular adjective, but it's not wrong. Bee has a good heart and a quick mind, even if some of her values are a little...unusual.]

A long time ago, people would follow the bees back to their hives and get the honey. Now there are people who keep bees and collect honey from them whenever they need it.

[We can go and find some honey in the kitchens if you're done with the bee is on the tip of Leia's tongue, but she suspects the girl might hear it as a veiled order. They don't need to leave if Bee doesn't want to; she's stuck on the Moira so long that it would be a pity to take her away from the sunshine and sweet-scented grasses of the plains.]

[personal profile] kidjoy 2016-05-22 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Her nose wrinkles a little, but she's not upset by it. The boys had always been gentle with her, in those moments when it was just the crew and no one else to watch. She's not surprised a few sugary sentiments slipped in. From them, it was okay. From anyone else, she'd be truly annoyed.]

Keep 'em? Like pets? [Her eyes grow wide and she whirls around to face Leia.] Can people keep 'em like pets? You think we could put some on the ship?

[They're pretty and small and weird. She's always been fascinated with the few creatures the Zone's had to boast, from the lizards to the roaches. Living things she didn't have to be wary of, solid and hearty in their own right. These bees are a new living thing for her to obsess over, and a namesake at that.]
imahologram: (sixty-three.)

[personal profile] imahologram 2016-05-24 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they aren't exactly tame. They can sting.

[As far as Leia's concerned, that means they aren't exactly ideal pet material, but her standard is the pittin, not the radioactive roach.]

We could put some on the ship, but I'm not sure if the garden has enough flowers for them. [Her knowledge of beekeeping is limited to the facts she's already offered, and the last thing she wants to do is bring home something that might die on the poor girl. In a fit of inspiration, she says--a little recklessly:] If you wanted a pet, we could look for one in Aldera.
kidjoy: Live version of the girl smiling ([Smile])

[personal profile] kidjoy 2016-05-26 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
And? Lizards bite. Don't stop anyone from playin' with them before we eat 'em.

[Not that she plans to eat the bees, but still.

She's a little put out by the idea they can't keep any; she would have liked to show Kobra the her namesake. But Leia's idea, however reckless it may be, does recapture her apt attention.]

Really? I could have something? [She's bouncing on her heels in seconds, joy written across her face.] Yes! We gotta look. You know, I've always wanted one but there ain't much to choose from out in the Zones. Most nice things don't live long out there.

imahologram: (twenty-seven.)

[personal profile] imahologram 2016-05-30 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
[You eat lizards? she wants to ask, but of course they do. They drink irradiated water, too, from the sound of it; lizard-eating is the least of the girl's problems.]

Lizards are a little smarter than bees. Easier to control, too.

[And with excitement like that, Leia can't help but think this plan isn't a bad one. The girl is old enough to take care of a pet, and Leia thinks she's responsible enough, too.] Come on--there has to be at least one pet shop in Aldera. I'm sure we can find you something you'll like.
kidjoy: Live version of the girl sitting ([Killjoy])

[personal profile] kidjoy 2016-06-01 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ain't all that easy to control. They get real feisty once they realize you're stabbin' at 'em.

[Her grin widens and in her excitement she starts to reach for Leia's arm, like she would have to pull Kobra around. She catches herself just before she touches skin, sticks her hands back into her pockets. But the motion was obvious and under the grime of her cheeks, Leia may notice the hint of red embarrassment.]

Well come on. We can't just stick 'round here if there's something like that to see.
